Poll question: Who do you think will win the Republican nomination and why?
At first, I thought McCain would be the nominee because the MSM was so reverent towards him. Then I thought it would be Giuliani for the same reason. Then Thompson was getting great press being compared to Reagan (until he started to run). Romney's good looking, but will the Repubs pick a Mormon? Now Huckabee is surging. The problem is that every one of these candidates has MAJOR baggage of some kind or another. So who do you think will win the nomination?

1. All the rethugs will be voting Democratic this year; they got no one!
My first reflex (or is that reflux) would be McCain, but he's pro-war, and I think Americans are sick of it. Who's left?

2. Huckabee, just based on
the momentum.

I think Lieberman's very publicized endorsement of McCain will hurt him in the long run. It's the cherry atop the crazyville sundae.

3. Romney
He's ahead in NH, SC, etc. He'll carry the momentum through. Ghouliani's career is over.

4. "None of the above"
Edited on Tue Dec-18-07 08:53 PM by Heaven and Earth
Huckabee will take down Iowa, Paul in a shocker in New Hampshire, Mitt in South Carolina, Huckabee in Florida (guiliani drops out), and a combo of Mitt, Huck, and Paul on the first large day, and beyond that, who knows...a brokered convention featuring a face none of us suspects?

7. Giuliani. But, at this point, it doesn't matter.
Unless some major earth-shaking event occurs, or the Democratic candidate is caught in a provable scandal of major proportions, the Dems will have to work hard to lose in '08. Even though they've proven capable of throwing away elections, I really doubt that they'd be able to pull it off.

Bush and the rest of the Republicans have so soiled themselves in the eyes of the public with the war, the endless scandals, the state of the nation, and are so split between the right-wing and the ultra right wing, that even I, the ultimate cynic, would be astounded to see another Republican infesting the White House.

Even as badly as "our" congress has performed, I think it highly unlikely that the Republicans will control either the House or Senate in '09.

Because as much as God wants Huckster to be the nominee, the Lord knows that I need the humor value a lot more.

11. It'll be Huckleberry
He'll win in Iowa and have a lot of momentum going into NH and Florida. I think Mittens will win in NH and Michigan, but Huck will pull an upset in Florida. Mittens will win in Nevada and Huck will take SC. On Super Tuesday Huck brings home the bacon with a lot of southern states, Mittens wins Mass and Utah, and Giuliani may take New York. Rudy's "late big state" strategy is a bad idea and he'll end up collapsing in late January and Huck will fill the vacuum of Republicans looking for some non-Mormon to support.

12. Rudy ... eventhough the GOP is fractured ...
Rudy represents the corporate neocons ... so he'll get their money. And money counts.

Huck gets the crazy right wing (poor people with no teeth have little money to contribute).

Romney splits the difference to some degree ... but is so weak that it won't matter.

13. I foresee a McCain/Huckabee ticket.
Huckabee will bring in the far right fringe. McCain's still being touted as a "maverick" by the media who revere him and will play up his appeal to independents.

Do I think this is a winning ticket? No.

14. McCain, easily the least insane or creepy of them all...
Notice John's kept a low profile? Granted, he's nearly out of cash, but at least he's not having any rage eruptions in the media.

19. I think McCain is too old
Even though his mother is going strong at 90 whatever, John seems to lack energy and vitality. He just looks old. Plus he's pro-war and America is sick of war.

20. Oh, I totally agree...
But maybe after the "holier than thou" battle between Huck and Mitt runs it's course, I just wonder of McCain's age won't be so much an obstacle anymore.

Rudy's far too slimy, that'll never happen.

22. First of all, this is a great question

Second, it isn't Huckabee. The media is reporting the Huckster's role in the release of the rapist/killer when he was Governor at every turn. This tells me the big corps don't want Huckabee.

Evangelicals hate Romney because he's a Mormon -- no chance of that vote.

Evangelicals also hate Rudy because he's Catholic, but they also hate him because he is socially liberal, and his affairs, divorce, etc. Again, no chance with the evangelicals or socially conservative.

Fred is not worth mentioning.

McCain is too old but actually most viable amongst this sorry bunch.

Other -- I have no clue.

Same reason they chose Dole in 1996 even though it was clear that he had no chance.

26. Mittens. Makes the most sense on paper, can get most factions
of the GOP to (eventually) unite around him, has a picture-perfect family (compared to Huckabee's "Deliverance" cast of characters).
