"Voting machines could be fixed for '08" Denver Post article

"Secretary of State Mike Coffman said the flaws his office found in Colorado's electronic voting machines could be fixed with upgrades and patches in time for the 2008 presidential primaries and election. Coffman asked the state Legislature today to change state law to give his office more flexibility in how those machines are certified.

Coffman's comments came a day after his office announced it had found many of the electronic voting machines used in Colorado unreliable and not secure — throwing the 2008 presidential election into turmoil. The review came after a state judge in September found the state process for certifying voting machines inadequate and ordered recertification.

"State Senate Majority Leader Ken Gordon, a Denver Democrat, said he was worried that the public still will have doubts about electronic voting. "The bell has been rung on the problems of electronic voting machines," Gordon said. "The Legislature may consider possible solutions that don't use electronic voting machines or minimizes their use."

"Look, we've had nothing but successful elections with this equipment," Rich said. "Isn't it a shame that our own secretary of state has gone down a path that will punish counties with successful elections?" "I'm not willing to risk the 2008 election," Rich said. "I'm talking to county attorneys and the commissioners. We're going to take a look to see if we're going to do this with or without the secretary of state."

note to mods: I hope this isn't a repeat... I searched and didn't find any posts about this.

Also, each paragraph was one sentence, and didn't give much insight into the article. A couple of sentences I combined. It's still a small part of the article.

1. It's nice to see that Gordon is acting like a shadow SoS
If Coffman leaves to run for CD6, he might still get the job.

4. I have to admit that I don't understand Ken Gordon.
I have a hard time understanding where he is coming from.

I guess that's because he's DLC. :hi:

5. Yes but....
I still think he'd be a good SoS because he obviously wanted the job. I guess maybe that's the kind of thing that's hard to get excited about, so if he is that's good news for everybody. Plus if he gets in and Udall wins the election, there go the last statewide Republican seats.

:hi:
