DUERS: Need Help With Daughters Identity Theft. Her SS # has 2 Other Names

showing on it. This was brought to her attention after being turned down for a job with PayPal. She is 22 yrs old and this came up on the background check. Its also why she didn't get the job.

Any fellow Duer having any advice as to what to do now and maneuver through this mess, I would be grateful for it.

What I know is what she told me today.
Basically, they know the names of the two people. One person has been using it for 3 years. She is the only one who has ever filed taxes w/that SS #.
Any advice? Where do we start? She lives in Omaha, NE.
I'm pissed & can only imagine what a effin nightmare this is going to be.

1. Call Social Security
They are usually VERY helpful with questions I have. Call them, explain the situation. I'm sure they will be able to settle the problem when you provide her ID to them.

4. One thing you need to do is get a copy of her credit reports
https://www.annualcreditreport.com/ (It's free once a year.)

5. Maybe
her bank would be willing to help.

Also, watch out for weird changes to medical records.

6. Contact the 3 credit agencies
What are they experian, equifax and transunion. I would contact every live phone number I could find to make sure somebody was getting this fixed.

Somebody used my broter's social security number years ago and it took a few months to get it fixed. I'm pretty sure he had to go through the credit companies to fix it.

8. Calling one of them to put a fraud alert on your credit report triggers the other two.
Which is handy. :)

9. I don't trust anybody
I would be calling every number at every company until somebody said "fixed". That's just the way I am.

7. Get copy of credit report. Put a fraud alert on her credit report (should be free).
File a police report for the identity theft (useful if the persons who have stolen her identity use it to open fraudulent accounts - much easier to convince companies of the existance of fraud when you have a case#, even if you have absolutely no hope whatsoever of having the case "solved". The case# is a tool, not a hope of justice.)

Call Social Security.

Best of luck. It all sucks, and she hopefully will be able to get a job soon!

Was told last night that Transunion is the best one to start with. I will check out every link you guys gave me and file the police report and check her medical records since I never thought of either of those. I do know you need a SS# to apply for Federal Assistance, (medical, housing, food, etc.)

I do very much appreciate your advice.
Thank You all.
