Unprecedented media consolidation in recent years has allowed giant multinational media conglomerates to dominate growing numbers of local news markets from coast to coast. These media giants have swallowed up locally owned newspapers, TV and radio stations across America. This has presented challenges to both our culture and our democracy by undercutting the American tradition of a local press, rooted in and responsive to their own communities.

Central to our American democracy is a rich and varied supply of news and information. An informed citizenry requires the “uninhibited marketplace of ideas,” where there is an open exchange of communications regarding music, news, information and entertainment programming over the public airwaves. Broadcasters, along with newspapers, still produce, disseminate, and ultimately control the news, information, and entertainment programs that most inform the discourse, debate, and the free exchange of ideas. As the Supreme Court has observed, “it is the right of the public to receive suitable access to social, political, esthetic, moral and other ideas and experiences.” That right is enshrined in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

By moving forward now with relaxation of the newspa
per-broadcast cross-ownership rule, the majority ignores the repeated pleas of the American people and their representatives in Congress. There is no time-sensitive issue that compels us to act today. In fact, we were asked by leaders in Congress, including our oversight committees, to defer today and conduct a more inclusive process. That we are moving forward when the voices that matter are asking us to refrain defies the imagination.

The FCC has never attempted such a brazen act of defiance against Congress. Like the Titanic, we are steaming at full speed despite repeated warnings of danger ahead. We should have slowed down rather than put everything at risk.

Today, the Federal Communications Commission voted to remove the longstanding “newspaper/broadcast cross-ownership” ban that prohibits a local newspaper from owning a broadcast station in the same market.

Josh Silver, executive director of Free Press, issued the following statement:

“FCC Chairman Kevin Martin is ignoring the public will and defying the U.S. Senate. His decision to gut longstanding ownership rules shows once again how the largest media companies — with their campaign contributions and high-powered lobbyists — are corrupting the policymaking process at the expense of local news coverage and independent voices.

“Martin’s FCC relied on slanted research and a rigged process to reach today’s preordained outcome — local media wrapped in a bow for Tribune, News Corp., Gannett and all the rest.

“With these new rules, there is no doubt that the ownership diversity crisis will get worse as these companies cash in on consolidation. Expect more newsroom layoffs and less quality news coming soon to a city near you.

“Fortunately, the fight is far from over. More than two dozen senators have already vowed to throw out these new rules. And the courts won’t look too kindly on the broken and corrupt process that brought us to today’s vote.

“The public simply won’t stand for another massive giveaway. They are sick and tired of partisan shouting and celebrity trash being passed off as news. They want more choices, more variety, more diversity — not more of the same. The growing public outcry is only going to get louder.”

Especially political statistics. The import of the 100K mark has to do with how things are counted in Washington. Now, I have no firm figures, just what I've gleaned over the years. When someone calls, they represent a certain number of people that feel the same way and didn't call.

The same is said for typed or hand-written letters and now emails. So, if one letter represents 20 people that didn't write a letter and feel the same way, then 100,000 letters (to the Washington DC insiders) represent 2,000,000 people that feel the same way. Now if 2 million people change their vote because they are mad about something, THAT is why it is important.

Letter writing campaigns by RW religious groups has made a big difference, just look at how, during election cycles, they are pandered to and then summarily ignored the rest of the time (for the most part). What has not occurred and needs to occur is more letter writing, more participation from the left and efforts like this are important and they do matter.

Nay-sayers are one of two people, they want to remain down-trodden or they can't fathom a workable progressive coalition dragging the repug-light dems as well as the centrists (read fearful) dems back to what the Democratic party stood for, The People.

There are some who still know the first three words of the Constitution, "We The People..." and the import of those three words. Without the consent of the people government will not work, any government. The foundation of the US Government is "We The People." We the people decide to allow the things that happen in this country, we the people can band together and repair and restore what is damaged and defiled.

We the people can make the changes needed to right this country, and we the people can progressively move this country in the correct direction. Something I've heard and will repeat here, "if you aren't part of the solution, you're part of the problem." What's the problem?

Too much griping about what's going on and not enough doing something about it. If sending an email to Washington or talking in front of my home town city council, or helping out on a campaign phone bank is all I can do to work toward a positive change in this country, then as long as I can I will do it until they further restrict my ability to spread the dangerous ideas about freedom and having an open mind. Even then, freedom will always be with me because I will continue to believe. I have no fear to dream of a better America.

So, there are reasons why "only" 100,000 are important. They are the few brave enough to stand up for the rest of us, they are the few which truly lead, they are the few by example help others feel brave enough to join into the fray, and they are the few that tip the balance to embolden those in positions of power to thumb their noses and the bullies currently in power.

I signed and have told others, because that is how the 100,000 eventually become the majority.

223. There's an idea that occurred to me when I wrote that post above, but I don't know if it's feasable.

Suppose, instead of a signature on a petition, someone actually asked for a dollar with the understanding that when a law was passed that carried out the wishes of the donators, the money would be released to the DNC or something like that. Would that be seen as bribery?

What if the money were released to charity? There would still be a media attractive message of people willing to throw a dollar into the pot instead of just clicking a mouse.

There's always a problem of what to do with the money if legislation does not pass. Maybe it goes into a pot for the next time an issue comes up.

In my idea there's no letter. But the only people that would participate would be those that believe that their cause is worth putting $1 dollar to. Or people who want to get Washington's attention in ways only money can.

Almost anyone can afford a dollar. I'll bet nearly every (99%) signer of that e-petition, having access to a computer, could put a dollar to the cause of the petition.

It would make for a substantial contribution.

Legally it might not be a bribe since the money is not promised to any particular person, but to an organization that has no direct control over the outcome.

If it's true that while 100,000 might sign an e-petition almost no one would donate even a dollar to the cause of the petition, then I suspect no one would take the e-petition seriously. Why worry about even 100,000 people if they believe that clicking a mouse is the most they'd likely do?

I signed the petition, and also recommend that when you are responding to things like this, you can always take the open letter/sample letter that they have provided, reword it by taking the paragraphs of subject matter as a guide and framework, and re-state the situation using your own words; then send it to your Senator/Representative, or etc. I did that a little while ago for a clean water/stop water-diversion campaign, that worked and stopped a proposed bill.
