"Shawshank Redemption" in real life?
ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) — Two jail inmates used photos of bikini-clad women to hide holes they used to escape and left behind a thank-you note, signed with a smiley face, for a guard they claimed helped them, officials said Monday.

1. Happened before in Newark, too
I think whomever builds NJ jais often forgets to put rebar in the concrete blocks.

2. Maybe they WERE supposed to put rebar in the concrete
but the rebar budget ended up in someone's pocket...

3. The Union County jail is right by the Elizabeth NJ railroad station

...(The escapees)...used...thick wire...to scrape away mortar (from) around...cinderblock(s)...and a 10-pound water shut-off wheel...to crush the cinderblocks so they could be hidden in the cells...They landed on the railroad easement outside the fence (and) ran in opposite directions...It was the first escape since the jail opened in 1986.

I know that area well--sitting by the right-hand window on a northbound train, you're only about arm's length from a wall of the jail one point. Smart of them not to try to board the train--even if they had the fare, they probably would have stuck out a bit in their prison uniforms!
