It makes it a problem of "gay-on-gay violence." It's not true. There are hundred of thousands, if not millions (judging by book sales) of straight people who hate gays. Not all white supremists have a black relative. Not all anti-semitic folks have a Jewish grandparent. Rapists aren't secretly transsexual women.

I think it's "an" explanation for the problem of homophobia. And the reason it's plausible in my mind is that there are so many people out there who are NOT homophobic, who are at the same time not gay- why the difference between those with a healthy attitude and those who are fearful?

It's a bit of convoluted logic, but I think there is a lot more truth to the idea than you give it credit for. This type of hate- it has to come from somewhere other than "they were taught." It's...a PHOBIA. HomoPHOBIA. It's a fear- and it seems personal in those who have it.

It's just hard to understand why some people can be so rabid against something that doesn't affect them, so it's an attempt to explain why they are so fanatical - that maybe they are doing that as a method of denying their own feelings - but you're right, they could just be bigoted heterosexuals and often probably are.

Liberals just have a hard time understanding (I know I do) how anyone can bother to hate so much, especiallly towards people not doing them any real harm. The hatred of undocumented immigrants strikes me that way, too, and doesn't even have that sort of "projection" explanation.

Nobody ever suggests racists are "secretly black", misogynists are "secretly female", those against immigration are "secretly Mexican", etc. But all too often people jump to the conclusion that homophobes are "secretly gay". It's irritating and insulting to GLBT people and suggests that the problem lies in our own community rather than with the bigots themselves.
