WTF??!! Huckabee's son hung a stray dog while a counselor at boy scout camp
And Huckabee tried to cover it up. Ugh, ugh, ugh.

A Son’s Past Deeds Come Back To Bite Huckabee
By Michael Isikoff and Holly Bailey | NEWSWEEK
Dec 24, 2007 Issue | Updated: 2:51 p.m. ET Dec 15, 2007

As Mike Huckabee gains in the polls, the former Arkansas governor is finding that his record in office is getting more scrutiny. One issue likely to get attention is his handling of a sensitive family matter: allegations that one of his sons was involved in the hanging of a stray dog at a Boy Scout camp in 1998. The incident led to the dismissal of David Huckabee, then 17, from his job as a counselor at Camp Pioneer in Hatfield, Ark. It also prompted the local prosecuting attorney— bombarded with complaints generated by a national animal-rights group—to write a letter to the Arkansas state police seeking help investigating whether David and another teenager had violated state animal-cruelty laws. The state police never granted the request, and no charges were ever filed. But John Bailey, then the director of Arkansas's state police, tells NEWSWEEK that Governor Huckabee's chief of staff and personal lawyer both leaned on him to write a letter officially denying the local prosecutor's request. Bailey, a career officer who had been appointed chief by Huckabee's Democratic predecessor, said he viewed the lawyer's intervention as improper and terminated the conversation. Seven months later, he was called into Huckabee's office and fired. "I've lost confidence in your ability to do your job," Bailey says Huckabee told him. One reason Huckabee cited was "I couldn't get you to help me with my son when I had that problem," according to Bailey. "Without question, was making a conscious attempt to keep the state police from investigating his son," says I. C. Smith, the former FBI chief in Little Rock, who worked closely with Bailey and called him a "courageous" and "very solid" professional.

3. Yep
Apparently he did more than just hang the poor dog. He and his co-counselor also slit the animal's throat and threw rocks at the dying creature.

And here's a photo of the little cherub from the NYT site:

Huckabee, a senior political science major, is president of the Union Advisory Board and is the former president of the Student Government Association. Co-chair of the Leadership Program for ASU, Huckabee was also selected as the Chi Omega sorority "Man of the Year." He is the son of Gov. Mike and Janet Huckabee of Little Rock, and the grandson of Pat Stephens of Hope.

That’s David Huckabee, 26-year-old son of GOP ninth-tier candidate Mike Huckabee — who seems like a perfectly respectable guy who believes bits and pieces of the Bible.

David, on the other hand, is what might happen if Roger Clinton ate Billy Carter. David Huckabee tries to smuggle his guns aboard commercial flights, angrily pays $6,000 fines in pennies, and brutally kills stray dogs at Boy Scout camps. He will also sue you if you say he’s a pothead.

15. But wait! There's more!
http://herald.astate.edu/herald/archive/newsF01/111501funds.html

Student funds paid to unlicensed firms

This is the first story in a series examining how student activity fee money is spent by the Student Activities Board and the Student Government Association.

By Shannon Knebel, Herald Staff

More than $5,000 of the Student Activities Board budget was spent for services provided by two companies operated by a student leader.

H & K Enterprises and Pyro-Erectus, owned by Union Advisory Board President David Huckabee, have provided the SAB with services ranging from providing promotional pens and concessions to building and lighting the Homecoming bonfire.

H & K Enterprises and Pyro-Erectus are not businesses, but partnerships, said Huckabee, a senior speech communications and political science major of Little Rock.

According to Ken Saddler spokesman for the City Clerk's Office, neither H & K Enterprises nor Pyro-Erectus are licensed as businesses to operate within Jonesboro. According to Saddler, this is illegal no matter the amount of money being made by a business...

6. Didn't Jeffrey Dahmer "get his start" by killing animals?
Young boys do unspeakable things, but a 17 year old "counselor" at a "scout camp" should be expected to be more responsible. There were redneck degenerates in the neighborhood that I grew up in who reportedly killed animals in cruel ways. Scouting is different in the South. The Florida Scout Council hired Ann Coulter to speak at one of their dinners.

Or so says my "second cup of coffee intuition". Who else but old Bush would be able to get Newsweek to run a story that, up until now, was only of interest to left wing bloggers?

Huckleberry is surging and the BFEE is going to "take care of him". Recall that old Bush introduced Romney at Romney's "religion speech" last week at the Bush 41 library in College Station, Texas? hmmm?

20. Gov Huckabee files libel suit to counter DAVID HUCKABEE MARIJUANA POSSESSION allegations
http://www.memphisflyer.com/backissues/issue541/media541.htm

The Little Rock Free Press, a free, biweekly newspaper should have been more diligent. An investigation of his school file actually showed no report of David Huckabee marijuana possession and nothing to substantiate allegations of marijuana found in David Huckabee's school locker. The only information found about marijuana use by son of presidential candidate Huckabee was by verbal reports of other high school students.

26. The Huckster Has Other Skeletons Other Than His Family
Let me issue to rejoiners here. First and foremost, I think this story is sickening...any violence to animals is wrong. On the other hand, I find it offensive when I see stories about family members of Democrats (Al Gore Jr.) and that it becomes a campaign issue. No, it's a private family matter and any attempting to make political hay out of this story deserves to get bashed. We've got another Huckster pardon story this morning along with a long record of wingnuttery to work with here.

That said, this sure looks like someone's not the Huckster's friend. They use the weasel Issakoff (Linda Tripp's BFF) to plant this story in a crucial time for the Huckster's campaign. This sure looks like someone's opposition research team dropping a big one and using their established corporate media toadies to do the dirty work.

The homestretch on this GOOP campaign is gonna be good and bloody.

30. There's The Other Pardons
I honestly think that's more problematic. From our perspective, this story is sadistic and strings were pulled, but let's pretend to be a Bible-thumping repugnican (shower afterward will be mandatory)...I think pardoning a rapist and now selling pardons for campaign donations (we just sent a Gov to jail for a similar scam) are a lot more indicative of the Huckster's character and complicity in ensuing crimes those people commited.

I definitely see this more as a GOOP hit job on him...an attempt by one of the campaigns (Mittens has my vote on this one) to get some legs on this story and hope it slows this bastard down. From my standpoint, I'd love the Huckster to be the nominee...almost as much as Ghouliani. There's a lot in flaws in this "good 'ole boy". Anything Isakoff touches makes me need to take a shower.

Cheers...

I agree, Isikoff is a shady character. Just the same, this is not a new story, at least not here on DU. If say, Rudy or Mittens were behind its sudden resurgence, I would not be surprised.

Frankly, I'm getting a bit of a kick watching the repubs slime each other. I am still predicting that repub voters will stay away from the polls in droves, come election time.

33. I Couldn't Agree More...
I just posted that I suspect this is the handiwork of the Mittens operation. A lot of the Blackwell operatives appear to be working for him.

The fun of watching the GOOPers eat their own is how this campaign has vascilated...almost everyone has been a front-runner and each has been attacked by the others...right now the Huckster's the flavor of the month, but will that last into January? I still think McCain emerges here, but, as you state well, his support will be thin at best.

Add to this that I still see a third party emerging from disgruntled Repugnicans next year.

Cheers...

35. I won't blame the father for the sins of the son, but...
I can sure blame him for covering it up and firing the head of the state police.

And about this selling pardons business-- Texas created the Board of Pardons and Paroles precisely because at least one Governor was selling pardons out the back door of the statehouse.

That's Texas one step ahead of Arkansas in criminal justice. Not a very big step, but it's Texas, ferchrissakes.

I do NOT want this man to be their nominee. There should be nothing to increase the possibility that he might become President. The choice of acceptable Presidents amongst the opposition is getting smaller and more frightening.
