Proposed Law Would Require Option For Ultrasounds Before Abortions
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- As state legislators headed home for the holiday break, a possible new law is opening eyes.
The house passed a resolution that would mandate doctors to ask a woman if she wants to see an ultrasound before having an abortion, NBC 4's Marcus Thorpe reported.
Neither pro-life or pro-choice groups disagree with the proposal as it is written. In fact, Planned Parenthood representatives said they already offer patients a look at an ultrasound before the procedure.
But the real issue at hand is what would happen if a woman sees the ultrasound -- would it change her mind?
"Once a woman has made up her mind and gets to that point, we don't think seeing an ultrasound will change too many minds," said Gary Dougherty, executive director of Planned Parenthood.
