Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was sentenced today. Twenty-three months in federal prison. No parole.

The suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback could have been sentenced up to five years by U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson. After sentencing, and after Vick apologized to the court and his family, Hudson told him: "You need to apologize to the millions of young people who looked up to you."

With all do respect to animal lovers and pet owners (I am both) this sentence seems to be out of proportion to the crimes committed. Yes, Vick's actions regarding dogs and dog fighting were disgusting, reprehensible, deserving of some sort of punishment. But, two years in a federal prison? And, what about the state charges Vick still has to face?

In the meantime, the Bush Crime Family continues its war atrocities that have resulted in the deaths of thousands, tens of thousands, of actual human beings; children incinerated, women eviscerated, men blown to pieces, soldiers killed or disfigured for life. And his punishment? Where is Bush's punishment? Has a judge said to Bush or his murderous Vice President that they need "to apologize to the millions of young people who looked up to you." Or to the families of the hundreds of thousands of corpses scattered across Iraq and Afghanistan? Or to the devastated U.S. families who have been shattered by the deaths of their husbands, mothers, sons, fathers - deaths caused by the lies of George W. Bush and the sick hubris of Dick Cheney?

Bush and Cheney and their co-conspirators are beyond the reach of the law. Today, tomorrow, forever. Their treachery will simply continue unabated and the death toll will continue to mount until such time as they are removed from office. But, the dog-killer Michael Vick? Off the streets. Locked up. Caged. Perhaps, now, the good citizens of the U.S. can relax a bit. Michael Vick's killing spree has been stopped.
