My Marin Palisades trail bike bucked me today .. bad. I'm a hurtin'!
I was coasting downhill and the front tire blew. I wiped out pretty badly. A motorist called 911. About the time the ambulance arrived, a neighborhood friend pulled over in his SUV (WASH MY DAMN MOUTH OUT WITH LYE SOAP FOR ALL MY RANTS AGAINST SUVs!) and loaded me up. I'm OK. Lots of scrapes and cuts. Sore as hell, but that's what Shiraz if for.

BTW: My 1991 Marin had the original tires on it. Stupid is as stupid does. I deserved this one. My neighbor took my Marin out to the bike shop for new tires and a straightening.

1. 16 year-old tires? Ever hear of a pre-flight check, Mac?
Edited on Mon Dec-10-07 07:59 PM by TomInTib
And pre-flight is the operative term here, isn't it?

Waiter, more Shiraz!

2. Of things I sometimes defer maintainance on
Edited on Mon Dec-10-07 08:00 PM by realpolitik
Tires, tubes, and brake pads are not on the list.
Ok, I sometimes let the chain go too long, but a bent uses 2 1/2 chains.

Glad to hear you are ok, man.

3. Eek.
After a good wipeout on a bike, I kinda put bike riding behind me.

And discovered Okinawan Karate in a school full of maniacs. Yesiree...nice and safe, that was. :eyes:

10. It was fairly "active" going over those handlebars!
My 60 years flashed by real fast.

4. Why does everybody forget the tires?
Cars and bikes both. I'll betcha that a big percentage of accidents come from the rollin' feet. I got in the habit of treating myself to new bike tires every year, needed or not, and it actually works out, because if my old tires still have life, there are any number of bike co-ops around here that take them in.

Hope yer ok! And remember, the proper terminology when one is airborne over his/her handlebars is "ass over teakettle".

Learjet tires: 220 PSI. Lockheed JetStar tires: 220 PSI. MD-80 tires: 220 PSI. Bicycle tires: who cares!?

12. I was thinking of that .. and of you, Babylonsister!
Of the 2.675 trillion thoughts I had as I sailed over the handlebars, I think one was "What the hell will Babylonsister think?"! Know what I mean?

11. Ouch, you have my sympathies
My downfall (so to speak) last month was my brakes. We'd had a lot of rain and I just thought they were wet and slipping. Nope, they were gone, gone, gone. I was approaching a very busy intersection on a downhill, and realized that there was no way I was going to stop, so I heeled over and dumped it. Big abrasions on my knee and forearm, and a bruise roughly the size of Massachusetts on my hip.

I'm finally feeling mostly better, I've replaced my brakes, and put on some heavier duty tires because I picked up three flats in about six days thanks to the construction around my house.

Ibuprofen is your friend.

16. been there on my Marin Lucas Valley
I'm feeling your pain. Hit a trolley track, and landed face first on the road once. Wound up with stitches near my left eye, and my left hand still has pain. Meanwhile, the rear tire lost a spoke, went out of true, and I lost a pedal in all that.

SUV drivers, blech, they seem offended to share the road with non-motorised transportation, had one pull into a shoulder just to 'show me a lesson'. Yeah, right. The only lesson I learned was that he's an ass.

Endos hurt, they really hurt, especially when you face plant, and then your bike runs over you, did that on gravel once. ONCE.

This is why I ride with helmet everytime. Now.
