I checked the National Center for Education Statistics site for the two studies they compared, 1992 and 2003, and it was fairly depressing. Younger adults seem to be performing better than older people, but it was hard for me to tell if it got better over time. On the one hand they said "No significant change" onthe other hand it looked like the US might have improved a few percentage points over 11 years.
