3. And I don't think she has mentioned
Bernie's name once - unlike John Rothman the past two nights said in for Bernie Ward coming in and out of each break - I also noticed that in the promo that they have with the hosts "singing" out the call in number they took off Bernie - oh that makes me very nervous.

You know I think these charges against Bernie are complete BS and I don't think they will hold up - but I think the damage will have been done. I did a google on Bernie tonight there were a KAZILLION hits on the indictment - last night there were only a few - and I thought even when Bernie is cleared those hits will always be there.....TONS of hits on him being a pedophile and there are NO CHARGES that indicate ANY ABUSE TO ANY CHILD

When this is resolved where will Bernie go to get his good name back - I LOVE Bernie and I'm very upset about this....

8. While I agree this is BS against Bernie the damage is indeed done.
His old station is all but showing signs of replacing him in his time slot. So I don't think Bernie will be coming back at all after this. So once Bernie gets out of this one he should sue the pants off of who ever put these charges on him. If nothing else to make up for the possible financial hit due to this.

As for Kraft, she filled in the Peter B. Collins a while back when he was on vacation and in my opinion she's a liberal version of a NeoCon (yeah I know that's a stretch but that's how I see her), And after two days I switched her off and went to something else until she came back. And since both Bernie and Ray are the only reasons why I listen to KGO (and I listen to Ray mostly thru Podcasts) KGO just lost one listener in that timeslot.

9. The odds are against him getting off.
His explanation of his conduct is probably truthful, but his lawyer has pretty much acknowledged that he broke the law. His best chance of getting off was probably convincing the prosecutors not to bring an indictment, because it's not easy to convince a jury not to convict on anything to do with child porn.

12. and no matter what, he will always be "the radio-personality who was charged with kiddie porn"
Once that's "out there", it never goes away.. personally, I think that "studying kiddie porn" for "research purposes" has a disingenuous feel to it, UNLESS you happen to be a psychiatrist / psychologist who specializes in the field and you have the backing of a prestigious university or foundation.

It's just too "convenient" of an excuse to claim you are doing research, and leave yourself open to all kinds of dangerous allegations, if you are truly doing research...

and we ALL know that perverts come in all shapes, sizes, professions, ages, marital status, so once accused, it's next to impossible to un-do..and the more one tries, the more guilty they look..

4. years ago
she was on kgo (subing I guess) talking about how WWII was a universally popular war. Since I was bored I called in and tried to tell her that while it was a 'popular' war support for it was not 'universal'.
She proceeded to pot me down and go on a rant about how that wasn't true and I was unpatriotic.

Ever since I change the station when I hear her voice.

5. Yea, I tuned in, heard her, and tuned out! I'm listening to Rachel
Maddow on KTLK. I want Bernie back! If KGO fires him, I don't think I'll ever stream them again. I like Karel and Ray T, but for me, Bernie was the ONE! I've listened to Bernie for several years, and I'm just not buyin this BS against him.

18. I Agree 100%
Bernie Ward was the Best! I doubt if I ever listen to KGO if Bernie is gone for good. There just isn't anyone there just as good to replace him. And now we will have to hear the idiot Dr. Wattenburg dish Bernie if he is found guilty. That alone will make me want to puke!

10. Do you think they're trying to send Keith Olbermann a message?
Just like Keith, Bernie never pulled any punches. I noticed that he followed a lot of themes that KO has featured on Countdown. I hope he gets through this. We'll miss him even with the static filled reception four hundred miles from San Francisco.

13. Bernie Ward is done, sadly.
He's tainted now. Doesn't matter what the truth is.

In this great country of Amurika, an allegation equals a conviction. Presumption of innocence? Please, that's out in the trash with our rights.

If he were revealed to be innocent or cleared of these charged in a court of law, it doesn't matter. This all-powerful allegation will follow his around for the rest of his life. People will smear him every where he goes. People don't give a damn. They just don't give a fucking damn.

I don't know what the truth is, and / or how to feel about the whole situation. I listened to Bernie Ward every night for a little over a year. I've gotten to know him.

I know that it's probable that he will not return to KGO, and it seems that Rothmann is being groomed to fill his time slot.

20. We have posters on DU who espouse that attitude on the Duke lacrosse players
If Ward is cleared, and KGO does not offer him his show back, I will never listen to that station again.

14. For the record, it's Christine Craft
All DUers should revere her, if only for this:

After leaving CBS, she worked at a number of stations in California, including KEYT-TV in Santa Barbara. After a year at KEYT, she moved to Kansas City to work for the Metromedia, Inc. ABC affiliate, KMBC-TV. Craft claims that, unbeknownst to her, a media consulting company had made a tape of her, and had shopped it around to several stations throughout the country, including KMBC. Executives at KMBC asked her to come to Kansas City for an interview, and hired her, even though she claims that she told the station management that she "showed signs of her age and experience", and was not willing to be made over.

After eight months of her two-year contract with KMBC, she was removed from the anchor position, because a focus group had determined that she was "too old, too unattractive and wouldn't defer to men." Craft refused to accept the promotion, and went public with her disagreement with the station with an interview in a local newspaper. She left the station and returned to television in Santa Barbara.

While working in Santa Barbara, she filed a breach of contract lawsuit against Metromedia. In 1983, a federal jury in Kansas City awarded her $500,000 in damages. The federal Judge overturned the award and ordered a second trial, this time in Joplin, Missouri. The second jury also awarded her the same $500,000. Metromedia appealed the decision, and the 8th Circuit Court overturned the decision. Craft's appeal to the United States Supreme Court was denied.

Following the trial, Craft wrote a book, Too Old, Too Ugly, and Not Deferential to Men (ISBN 0914629654) detailing her experiences.

15. Bernie
It sounds like what Bernie did was technically against the law...albeit an unjust law ...I sure didn't know it was against the law to look at anything.

The law was probably instituted to catch child predators...but that is NOT what Bernie is charged with that I am aware of ...I think he is only charged with looking at something and downloading it on the Internet in that one brief time frame a few years back...ostensibly when researching hypocrisy.

Bernie does not fit the profile of child predator at all that I can see...and so this charge, brought some 3 years after the original findings, has a faint odor.

Bernie I wish you luck.

Christine Craft

Friday: 10:00 PM - 1:00 AM

California native and KGO fill-in host Christine Craft was the protagonist of a saga that, back in the '80s, put a glaring spotlight on gender discrimination in the media.

She started her media career in 1974 at Salinas TV station KSBW-TV, and over the next few years gathered extensive experience in all newsroom positions. By 1979 she was co-anchoring the news at KEYT-TV in Santa Barbara when she got the call from KMBC-TV in Kansas City.

Signed to a two-year co-anchor contract in 1980 by KMBC, she found herself unceremoniously dumped from that position a few months later and demoted to reporter because, the station said, focus groups said she was "too old, too unattractive and wouldn't defer to men." Neither deferential nor a doormat, she sued in federal court for breach of contract (Craft vs. Metromedia) and was awarded $500,000 by a jury.

The station appealed and got the judgment overturned. At a second trial, the jury also ruled in her favor, and once again the station prevailed on appeal. When the Supreme Court refused to hear the case, it ended - to be spotlighted later in her 1986 book Too Old, Too Ugly, Not Deferential to Men, which received the Rhodora Prize. She was named one of the top five collegiate speakers in the U.S. in 1984, and her story was featured in an exhibit at the Newseum museum of broadcasting in Washington, D.C.
(snip)

Today Craft cares for her 86-year-old father, Will, who's lived in Sacramento since her mom's death. She operates a part-time law practice in San Francisco; as a legal advocate for animals, she puts in many pro bono hours to convince judges and district attorneys to take animal abuse cases seriously. A competitive surfer in her pre-journalism days, she enjoys distance swimming and gardening.
