SACRAMENTO – Jewish Federation of the Sacramento Region leaders said Thursday they want to meet with Channel 3 (KCRA-TV (NBC) Sacramento) reporter Adrienne Bankert, in the wake of comments she made about Jews in a recent talk to students at Sacramento State.

"What we're going to try to do is have a personal meeting," said Michal Kohane, executive director of the Jewish Federation of the Sacramento Region.

Kohane said they want to meet with Bankert to try to educate her.

Bankert told a Christian organization on the California State University, Sacramento, campus that she has "never met a poor Jewish person ever in my life" and opined about how Jews founded Hollywood and were prominent in banking.

She later issued a statement, saying in part, "I apologize if anyone was offended by my remarks."

Channel 3 reporter Adrienne Bankert spoke about her belief in God in front of the International Students Christian Fellowship at (Sacramento) State recently.

Avi Ehrlich, reporter for the school newspaper, the State Hornet, wrote about a mini-controversy stemming from Bankert's remarks:

<snip>

Others took issue with parts of Bankert's message...One part of Bankert's presentation that (Sac State ethnic studies major Marc) Sorensen was uncomfortable with dealt with religious stereotypes.

As part of her presentation, Bankert asked: "Have you ever met a poor Jewish person?"

"I have never met a poor Jewish person ever in my life! Every Jewish person I went to school with had money, and if they didn't have money literally ... they knew how to get some. The Jewish people founded Hollywood, Jewish people were in banking, lawyers."

4. Well maybe she should take a trip to Eastern Europe or Israel.
Or better yet every time she meets a poor person maybe she should ask if they are a Jew, since most likely she only notices people with money.

5. TV reporters aren't celebrated for their brains-
particularly the local variety.

11. Well technically, anchors read (teleprompter).
But reporters are usually live out in the field without the benefit of a prompter.

So, they're not "reading," per se.

13. "if anyone was offended by my remarks" WTF!
Why can't people just apologize and leave it at that! That additional comment basically negates the apology.

Dumbass! :wtf: Does that mean she doesn't want to offend the Nazi's, KKK, and the skinheads?

:grr:

17. KCRA management on Bankert's Jewish comments
http://www.sacbee.com/static/weblogs/ticket/archives/009406.html

This just in: Anzio Williams, news director at Channel 3, has given 21Q this response to reporter Adrienne Bankert's's derogatory comments about Jewish people - originally published in a Sac State newspaper article:

"(KCRA) does not condone or endorse any comment that was made. We require all of our on-air talent to refrain from engaging in any outside activities or manners that impinge on our reputation of fairness, balance and accuracy.”

KCRA News Director
Anzio Williams

Asked whether Bankert has been disciplined, Williams says: “We’ve taken steps to address the matter internally and to make sure it doesn’t occur again.”

UPDATE (1:55 P.M.): Bankert, through KCRA management, has released the following statement:

"I have been made aware that certain remarks that I made to a small student
group at Sacramento State last week could be regarded as offensive
stereotyping to some individuals and the community at large. I never
intended any of my comments to be hurtful or to stereotype any particular
group. I am well aware of the harm that stereotypical comments can cause to
specific groups and our society in general. I apologize if anyone was
offended by remarks."

18. I am ALWAYS offended.....
When some idiot/bigot/both thinks I am so stupid as to not know
that water is wet or that fire is hot.

"I have never met a poor Jewish person ever in my life! Every Jewish
person I went to school with had money, and if they didn't have money
literally ... they knew how to get some. The Jewish people founded
Hollywood, Jewish people were in banking, lawyers."

and then, when she realizes she was overheard:

"I never intended any of my comments to be hurtful or to stereotype any
particular group."

OK, then are we to believe that her comments were intended to be
complimentary, or to stereotype ALL groups? She let her pants down
and got caught. That was bad enough. She only made it worse by
trying to make us believe she didn't say what she said. The only
further insult she could add to the people she insulted was to
insult their intelligence immediately afterward, and sure enough,
she did. Isn't there an unemployment line somewhere saving her a
place? You would think there were other people in California capable
of reading the news, who offer less embarrassment to their employers.
