An initiative petition that would ban most abortions in Missouri has been approved for circulation by Secretary of State Robin Carnahan.
The petiton drive would be conducted by The Elliot Institute, a non-profit group opposed to abortion and based in Springfield, Ill.,
If it gets on the ballot and is approved by Missouri voters, the proposed ban would likely end up in court because of the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision allowing most abortions. Some abortion opponents have been pushing for a court case, in hopes that the current Supreme Court would overturn its 1973 decision, known as Roe v Wade.
But first, supporters will need to collect signatures from at least 86,000 registered voters, split among six of the state's nine congressional districts. Depending on the districts where the signatures are collected, the necessary number could be as high as 95,000 valid signatures.
