Screw you, Catholic League: I am ALL OVER "The Golden Compass" like a cheap suit...

Reviews look good, the book is fascinating, and I don't think the world needs your self serving criticism, which, from were I sit, is a desperate attempt to squelch anything that may advocate that people, you know, think for themselves.

The problem I have with all the criticism coming from the religious community is that it's mainly concerned with the fact that the characters openly defy the political religious hierarchy. This is somehow being mistaken as an open hostility toward God, when in fact it's an open hostility to what they interpret as their own divine supremacy. Could someone please give them all copies of the non- establishment clause of the 1st Amendment?

1. The books were great. The movie looks awesome.
I'm going to see it despite that great Moral Authority (the Catholic League) telling me it's bad.

Funny, where were they while thousands of children were being molested by their own church?

4. The Catholic League is, and always has been, a joke.
It's my understanding that those who reviewed the movie for the Catholic bishops gave it a "thumbs up."

Some distinction needs to be made between organized religions and the fringe groups which invariably associate themselves with them.

While I'm not religious myself, fair is fair.

3. For Heavens sake!
"The Catholic Legue" is one illiterate idiot, Bill Donohue. He does not speak for the Catholic Church.

5.  First, the Catholic League is one nerd with a computer
Second, the previews look like a gorgeously photographed fantasy film. Why the godly have their panties in a wad over it is beyond me.

It's not unique among films that have child leads ignoring stodgy authority to do what is right.

I suppose I'll have to see it when it comes out on DVD just to find out what all the fuss was about.

because someone put the pope in a bad light ... it didn't acknowledge it for 400 years ...

10. I had an interesting question last week.
In September, I did a book talk of "The Golden Compass" for my class, and mentioned that there would be a movie out in December. It's been checked out regularly ever since.

I had a student stay back when his class was dismissed to talk to me. He looked scared. He asked me if what he heard about the book was true; that "the children try to kill God." I told him no, of course.

I haven't paid attention to any religious protests, although I knew that there were bound to be some. When I fielded this question, I assumed that the anti-golden compass campaign was well under way. The books have been around since 1995, and apparently have escaped notice until the movie publicity hit the media.
