I agree. It is just a piece of paper...if you don't defend the spirit of the ideals housed in that paper. If the US does one day become an awful plutocratic authoritarian regime, the people have only themselves to blame for collectively resigning themselves to such a fate. They were given so much by the Founders, and they gave it away to people who don't care about freedom. To be sure, there would be heroes who drew the line in the sand and fought until the bitter end to defend freedom, but if they lost, it's because many more silently acquiesced to tyranny and terror.

It's an old story. History shows representative republics have degenerated into dictatorships when the people who are charged with defending the ideals of democracy voted to give it away to a tyrant who promises them the world. It's why the Roman Republic became an Empire. It's why Germans voted for Hitler.
