1. She still got you for a penny!
You should have gotten 8 cents back, yes?

Those pennies are adding up for someone . . .

23. ha- I never thought of that
But I used to be a copy editor, and now I am a critic. So you are right on!

It's also a little homage to Harry Belafonte.

into his bank account thinking he would make maybe 5 or 10 grand...turned out it was millions of dollars!

5. I think I'm part of the problem
When my change is a few cents, I usually wave it off and point to their penny jar or whatever; so it's probably because of stupid people like me who are making them think that nobody wants their change these days... I'm sorry!

8. You've reminded me of a situation
in Italy years ago when there was a genuine national shortage of metal coinage for small change. To help overcome it it became acceptable in some instances to get your change in sweets.

13. Toward the holidays, people who work in customer sevice get
hit the worst. They're really shitty jobs, and extremely demanding. You may find more and more people making honest mistakes because they're truly flustered and have demands flying at them every second from many sources. I work retail and heard a customer ask my co-worker, "is she okay?" about me just today, out of concern. I wasn't.

15. Sorry to hear about your bad day.
I understand retail. I have worked retail and restaurants. I was the only one at the drive-up window and there was no one inside at the register. I paid attention this time because it has happened so often lately. The last 3 times I have been to the drive-up. This girl was not busy.

19. Thanks, Tuesday.
Woo, I was pulled several thousand directions today at the clothes shop where I work. My immediate boss (whom I love) was about as wall-eyed as I was. Toward the end of the day we were punchy & giddy, & ready to go home. :D

20. I ALWAYS made a full faith effort to tender the CORRECT change.
I've been everything from a burger flipper to a cash register operator to even a janitor. 7 cents isn't a lot thanks to our debt-based monetary system, but 7 cents used to buy you a loaf of bread back then.

Always, he hauls out his "coin purse" and damn whoever's in line behind him, if they have to wait a few minutes. I love my dad, he's so cute!!:D

26. Ah.
Correct them. Get your change. Go home.

Most places of business will not argue with you about change. They'll just give it to you. It was probably just an honest mistake, due to an inattentive server. They're very busy, and sometimes screw up. It happens.

31. Not sure about your edit...
First: If I came off as being mean or snarky, I apologize. I honestly didn't mean to offend (although I realize that my "tone" can sometimes seem offensive). Sorry about that. Seriously. Sorry. I mean it.

Second: I don't see the Big Deal. Either write it off an leave, or correct them and get your change. To me, I'd just write it off if I thought that the seven cent snafu was simply an honest mistake. If, however, I thought that I was getting short-changed purposefully, I'd make it a point to get my change.

Again, I'm sorry that I was being flippant.

32. I evidently did not get the point across that I was trying to make.
I now understand that I am a very ineffectual communicator. No need to apologize. The blame is entirely in my lap. I have put you on thread ignore to make sure I never bother you again. You might consider giving me the same courtesy.

You never "bothered" me at all. Ever. It appears as though *I'm* an ineffectual communicator. Again, I apologize for being abrasive.

However, I so rarely start threads, you'll probably not notice any difference. :D

28. Actually, I often wonder this same thing myself
I wouldn't say that it happens more frequently now than before, because I always have noticed this happening, and I've suspected that it was a case of them seeing how much they can let slip by. But there are other explanations I've considered.

For example, I often try to give close to exact change, like you did, because my car ashtray is already full of change and I like getting rid of that rather than adding more to the pile. I think when cashiers get anything that includes coins, their brains may sort of turn off and just think that they were handed exact change, y'know? Maybe they just assume that the fact that they got bills and coins means that they were handed exact amount, with no change due. It could be a case of them going on to auto-pilot.

But again, I think there probably are some who do it deliberately with the intent of either 1) making up for any other errors in the opposite direction or 2) tallying up and taking the extra.

Dunno. When it happens to me, and if I detect the attitude like you did today, that it was assumed, I just look at them with my hand out until it clicks in their brain. It's funny, because when someone really tries to be exact with me, those are the ones I'm more likely to tell to just keep it.
