Big Brag - 17-year-old granddaughter wants donations to Atlanta Food Bank instead of Christmas gifts
She was raised by a rich Republican father and a barely-making-it Democratic mother, split custody so equal time with both, has attended a fancy private school since she was four, saw both sides up front and personal and our side won. She doesn't just talk the talk, she walks the walk. Big time. So proud of her. Make that awed by her.

2. That rocks
My 13-year-old niece asked for the same for a Bat Mitzvah present. What's wrong with these kids, ignoring their consumer heritage?

9. Don't discount the "fancy private school" in this
Private schools in Seattle (mostly religious, mostly conservative) require community involvement as a part of their curriculum. A friend of mine went to one, and had to put in a minimum of 10 hours each quarter doing volunteer work with one of a long list of groups; he worked mostly with a group that brought clothing, food and basic medical care to people living on the streets. It can have a powerful impact on a young person. The trick, of course, is not to forget such lessons.

Personally, I wish public schools had such requirements.

19. They got a wonderful education in the private school
but went to school with Republican-leaning children. I think there were only a couple of Democrats in the whole school - and it was a large school, actually has a campus. I think exposure to both sides of the spectrum made a difference.

10. Thanks, thanks, thanks.
This child was born with her heart - and her values - in the right place. Although she's lived in Alanta and environs all her life she had absolutely no concept of race. When she was five I drove down a major street (Ponce to those of you who know the city) and pointed out that at one time blacks lived on one side of the street, and whites on the other, that all the streets changed names when they crossed because whites didn't want the same address as blacks. She thought for a moment and then asked, "But where did all the tan people live?"

She is keeping the plush animal, though.

23. I wouldn't be surprised
Her goal right now is pre-law and then law. She wants to be a public defender to help indigent young people who, she says, usually have terrible public defenders. Ive told her, almost from the time she was born, that she's a WiseWoman. You could feel the wisdom and the goodness in her from the beginning, and it's so gratifying to see it blossom.
