Gore in Norway to get Nobel Peace Prize

Al Gore in Norway to Accept Nobel Peace Prize, Takes Public Transport

Former Vice President Al Gore arrived in Oslo on Friday to accept the Nobel Peace Prize he shared for the campaign against global warming, and shunned the traditional airport motorcade in favor of climate-friendly public transport.

Gore will accept the prize he shared with the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change at a ceremony in the Norwegian capital on Monday. Upon arriving in Oslo, Gore urged governments meeting at a climate conference in Bali, Indonesia, "to promptly produce a strong mandate."

He said he hoped they would move forward by two years the date for a successor to the Kyoto treaty, "so we don't have to wait until 2012," when Kyoto expires, to have a tougher agreement in place to reduce the emissions blamed for warming.

The governments meeting in Bali hope to finish drafting a new climate treaty by 2009, and have it ratified by 2012.

Before his arrival with his wife Tipper, Gore informed his hosts that he would not need the traditional motorcade from the airport, preferring to take the high-speed and environmentally friendly airport train and then walking to his downtown Oslo hotel.

"I use public transport when I can. It isn't always possible," Gore told The Associated Press while walking up Oslo's main street to his hotel. He said the train was much faster than a limousine, but that it was also a symbol of efforts to reduce pollution in hopes of slowing climate change.

"It is a gesture. It is also one of the changes we are all going to have to be doing anyway," Gore said.

6. All other Nobel prizes are awarded in Sweden.
Alfred Nobel decided that Norway, which was united with Sweden under one king at the time, would get the responsibility of handing out the Peace Prize. He did not state a reason for this choice. The members of the Nobel Peace Prize committee, who chooses the laureates, are appointed by the Norwegian government, and the prize is handed out on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel's death.

4. Baloney. Maybe he thinks the environmental mission he's on is
more important. I don't pretend to know where his head is at, and I know you don't.

7. As a 'Draft Gore' advocate,
I was heartbroken when his organization requested that we stop all campaigning and fund-raising. I kept holding out for the 'Shermanesque' statement. But now, it was explained that his campaign for global climate change could not have withstood the battering and mudslinging of a presidential campaign, it seems reasonable for Gore to choose the priority of the environmental leadership route as he did. There is still hope that in some way, or in some shape, he will be able to take leadership politically, as well. He hasn't made the Shermanesque statement yet!

8. You're full of it
He is there BECAUSE he cares about this country. He didn't have to do anything after 2000 when WE turned our backs on him and this country. But boy, it sure is rich to see the whining from some who are so quick to judge others as they sit typing on a message board.

13. Wow...
So you trust Al Gore to be President -- so much that you'd want to draft him against his own will and better judgment...

-- but you don't trust him enough to make his own decision as to how he thinks he'll best be able to save the Earth.

Talk about a non-thinking, infantile snit.... whew!
