Iran still poses threat, says Brown

Britain still believes there is a risk of Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon, despite US experts saying it has halted its weapons development programme, Downing Street said.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown's spokesman said the potential threat remained "a very serious issue".

The American assessment, published on Monday, said Iran continues to enrich uranium and still could develop a nuclear weapon between 2010 and 2015.

But the report, a composite of findings from US intelligence agencies called the National Intelligence Estimate on Iran, concluded that Iran halted its nuclear weapons development programme four years ago in a concession to international pressure.
