"Sing Up" helps children learn through song
"I'd like to (.....) the world to sing in (.......) harmony. I'd like to (....) it in my arms and (....) it company."

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to learn things when you sing them?

British education experts have, and now a new national singing program called Sing Up has been launched in primary schools to help young children learn through song.

"Young people who are lucky enough to learn music and sing from an early age develop better social skills, memory, ability to listen and have more confidence," Howard Goodall, a composer and one of the country's top music experts, said as the project was launched.

Experts say that as well as helping language development, action and counting, songs can also improve motor-skills and maths abilities in very young children.

5. I agree, music is a wonderful way to encourage people to learn and understand the world.
It can bring us together. This particular group are having financial difficulties and may no longer be performing, it's sad because their message resonates with peace world wide.

Started in 1965 during a turbulent period in the United States, Up with People was founded by J. Blanton Belk as a positive voice for young people. Its historic path officially began in 1968 when it was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) as an international, educational non-profit entity.

Over the years, Up with People has become known as a tremendous force in international relations, education, and entertainment. The organization's worldwide influence is far-reaching:

 20,000 young men and women from more than 89 countries have come together to deliver a common message of hope and goodwill to people around the world;

 Up with People has visited 3,600 communities in 38 countries;

 3 million hours of community service have been performed by Up with People students;

 450,000 host families around the world have welcomed Up with People students to their homes;

 An estimated 20 million people worldwide have been directly impacted by Up with People.
Up with People's ability to both touch individuals and affect global change through music and service is unparalleled, as evidenced by the organization's historical highlights.

In 1967 my family and I vacationing in Rehobeth Beach Delaware got to see “Up With People” I was seven at the time and have never forgotten it, the message was clear and one than resonated with me throughout my youth into adulthood, people are the same everywhere regardless of which country they reside in and in realizing that everyone matters the world would be a much better place….

I still recall some of the verses and recall they were all about the world being seen as one despite color, religious and geographical differences…

6. Singing is a wonderful learning tool,
and young children love it.

I've used "multiplication rock" to teach 2nd graders their multiplication facts for years. I no longer teach primary age children, but when I did, you could walk into my room during math and see children singing to themselves while they worked.

A catchy rhyme or song will help put anything we need to memorize into long-term memory, and it's a lot more fun than repetitive drilling.

I also used to use many songs from "The Banana Slug String Band" in science units with primary kids.

A couple of my favorite songs from the slugs: "Dirt Made My Lunch," and "The Water Cycle Boogie."

Now that I'm teaching older students, I usually do a musical play at least once a year. I've recently done a musical comedy version of "Macbeth." While my students aren't ready for a reading of the original play, they now know the characters, the plot, and a wide variety of Shakespearian quotes, and they can sing them all. I've also recently done a musical/comedy version of "Theseus and the Minotaur." I still hear groups of students singing those songs on the field at recess. :D
