Anti-immigration deli owner championed by Mike Gallagher out of business
Edited on Mon Dec-03-07 04:44 PM by kskiska
Earlier this year, Farmer's Branch, TX, attempted to pass illegal alien immigration laws. Blue Star Deli owner Dave Mooney campaigned wholeheartedly for this legislation, allowing radio stations (including right-winger talk radio Mike Gallagher, who printed up t-shirts) to do shows from his place of business. Here's his story:

(snip)

Hello to All,
Just wanted to drop a note and ask a few questions. You know that I am out of business. I have lost everything I dreamed of having in a business and what I did have. Let me tell you a little story. You know about a year ago I had this wonderful little restaurant and it was growing at a wonderful rate. Had never seen a decline in sales was making money and was enjoying it. Was all I could have dreamed of. I was enjoying sales of 12 to 18 hundred a day. Even had a couple of 2100 dollar days. I was ecstatic over the sales. Everything was doing great. Then the immigration stuff started in Farmers Branch. I was contacted by the local Radio Stations and was asked if they could do some live broadcast. And of course I wasn’t going to turn down free advertisement. I said yes bring it in. Of course we got a real big boost to our sales. But then after a week or two the sales dropped a little. I didn’t think anything of it. We of course were contacted again and asked to do more shows and of course I said sure. Well then some of the people against all of this immigration stuff got mad and called in the opposition. And that I did a real big number to us. Our sales started falling more but I just kept thinking it will come back.

(snip)

We fell to numbers lower then my first day of business ($498.00). I was now being boycotted by the illegal’s and the people who supported them and also the people who were against them were now staying away because they didn’t want to be around a political hot spot. They didn’t want to be around anywhere were the said items were being talked about. I had lost almost all my regular customers because they didn’t want to here it. The supporters quit coming because it was old news and no one was talking about it. The opponents quit coming because I supported it. And the radios quit talking about it. I was and still back what happened in Farmers Branch. I am for an immigration reform that is right. But the fact that I am now out of business because of my show of support that is known nation wide. I am now almost $25000.00 in the hole and behind on payments do to my falling sales. Now I sent an email out to everyone I have an email address to to let them know that I was out of business and do you think I could get a mention on these radio stations of what happened with me or even an I’m sorry . Not even one station mentioned me our sent me an apology.

8. No they Shouldn't
He could have said no, but instead he allowed himself to be used like a 2 dollar a trick whore. So now his business is in the crapper, and the fault is all his!!!

15. The radio station with deep pockets used a small business to flame hate
The radio station was the big fish that fed off the little fish. The anti-bigots didn't boycott the radio station? The radio station still has its listenership. The radio station got all the bang and the small business took all the risk and got caught--out of stupidity, granted. But the radio station ruined the guy's business. The bigots at the radio station owe him. Clear Channel maybe?

6. Even Halliburton boycotted him
They used to order in food, but it all stopped when he took his stand. Apparently, there were some Hispanics working there.

What was he thinking?

10. Guess he should have thought it through
Can't say I feel sorry for him, regardless of his stance.

Letting his business get used as a platform for a highly contentious issue was downright idiotic.

Yeah, funny thing, when you insult people, they tend to stay far away from you.

Who knew?

19. Man, he should have known that illegals contributed that much to
his business. Maybe he lost the legals and citizens who were related to or friends with illegals, too.

He should have supported amnesty, for cryin' out loud! He'd be doing really well today.

21. This has been happening all over.
Some small podunk town passed some tyrannical anti-immigrant ordinances last year.

They had to rescind them this year when all their businesses down town failed.

26. Oh, come now. THAT can't have been the reason!
Surely it's some sort of conspiracy. We all know that illegal immigrants are a drain on our resources; they never, ever, ever inject money into the economy!

:sarcasm:

13. Create a product that appeals to a limited market and you get
what you were asking for. He expected loyalty from the types of people who give not a shit about anyone but themselves and their own selfish ethnocentric interests. One of the first rules of sales -know your customer. He got exactly what he deserved.

Karma's a b***h, aint it?

27. From the comments
He is not the first nor will he be the last who lost a business..been there and done that myself but like thousands of others I pulled up my pants and started over and made it the second time..

Let this be a lesson to the thousands more who are about to make this same mistake: Wear pants the first time around, even if it isn't in the job description.
