US report plays down Iran threat

Iran appears "less determined" to develop nuclear weapons than previously thought, US intelligence officials say.

Tehran halted its nuclear weapons program in 2003 but is continuing to enrich uranium, a National Intelligence Estimate assessment concluded.

The White House said the development was "positive news", but that the risk of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons remained a "serious problem".

Iran says its nuclear programme is for civilian purposes only.

1. Did you think he was lying? I never did. Not that I trust him
but I don't trust BushCo. They have too much to gain from another fake confrontation.

3. I keep remembering in interviews where he said they do not seek nukes
He says when both sides have them, they become useless. He has said this many times. Maybe he was telling the truth?

5. Despite the propaganda, he doesn't determine such things as he is not a dictator.

According to Iran's constitution, its supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who succeeded revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, holds the majority of the power. Elected leaders, including President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and members of parliament, hold much less authority.

Supervisory bodies -- including the Expediency Council, Council of Guardians and the Assembly of Experts -- also carry broad responsibilities to monitor the government and ensure the legislation follows both the constitution and Islamic law.

6. Hmm. The Ayatollah actually runs the show then
Now see I didn't really understand that. What would it hurt for our media to clarify this to all of us?

Thanks for posting that.

7. The Ayatollah has the most but not quite all. There's the councils as well.
The presidency and the legislature probably has the least. The media wants to run with the holocaust thing so that support for striking Iran will be popular.
