1. Actually..
.. they voted for Sarkozy and allowed him to beat the strike.

So they're not very smart at all.

3. I don't know how people can live so long without ever

stopping for a moment and wondering where they are on the globe, in the solar system, etc. I really don't get it.

I worked with a bunch of people who seemed intelligent enough, all in their 30's. One day, over lunch, someone pulled out a nice map of the world, without place names. More of a satellite view of the planet, really. Still-- all the continents were clearly visible. Not one person at the table could find the USA, and when I pointed it out, not one of them could find California (we were in Los Angeles).

I know we don't teach geography in schools anymore, and my own knowledge of the subject is sorely lacking, but Jesus-- I do have an idea of where and when I am in the universe. I can't imagine going through life and never having a moment of curiosity about that.

5. Funny you mention that
i'm reminded of the work we had to do in social studies where we had quizes where we were given blank maps and had to not only draw the border lines but enter in the names of the states/countries, as well as capitals, major rivers, etc. Do they not do that anymore?

Anyway, I forget what show it was on, but they had a map of the world, and had the names in the wrong places, and then made people find things on the map. They would point out the places based on the names on the map. So for instance they would put 'Iran' on Australia, and 'Iraq' on New Zealand and make them find it on a map and they'd point to Australia and New Zealand. They'd even then comment on current events based on this placement of the map.

Just shocking to me.

And this guy...what rotates around the earth. Just wow. And 56% of the audience? Really? People everywhere are for the most part pretty dumb apparently.

10. I observed my daughter getting left behind in certain subjects in her school ...
her supposedly high-quality private school. What ended up working for us was a 'hybrid' program, in which she goes to school two days per week, at her charter school, and I homeschool her the next few days, completing a well-designed 'packet.' We've made geography a priority, because I noticed that many I knew were not able to identify continents, regions, and countries; but, I had to take the initiative.
