Iowans, how are we doing with the storm?
Edited on Sat Dec-01-07 03:36 PM by Skidmore
I just lost satellite reception. The trees in the yard look like they are covered in glass. I hope we don't have any limbs come down. The wind is pretty brisk. Right now the precipitation is changing between sleet, rain and snow. No one has been traveling on the highway at all for some time now.

Stay safe.

1. I know Hillary was supposed to be participating at a forum in Iowa and she's
having to phone in because she was unable to get back into Iowa. Kinda got the feeling it was weather related. I hope you all stay safe and warm!

4. The Des Moines airport was closed for a few hours. I'm not sure if it is open again or not.

3. We have the same weather
you do, here in Northwestern Illinois.

I hope we don't lose trees. I hope we don't lose heat and electric, either. The repairmen would have a very hard time getting out.

There are only a few people on the highway here. I just saw someone driving on the shoulder. Maybe there is some traction there.

7. You'll warm up pretty soon--it'll melt, if you get our temps from Nebraska.
We started out the day with sheets of glass, but it's been above freezing this afternoon, and now everything's just melted and soggy. What a yucky day. I hope it all doesn't refreeze tonight.

9. News Report:
<snip>

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- There will be less campaigning than planned today in Iowa.

A winter storm has plastered the Midwest with ice and snow, leaving Iowa's Des Moines International Airport temporarily closed.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney canceled three campaign stops scheduled for today in southern Iowa, while Bill Clinton canceled a rally for his wife, Democrat Hillary Clinton.

Heavy ice around the state has left more than 2,000 people without power. A number of accidents have been reported on Iowa highways.

Meanwhile, there have been reports of difficult driving conditions in Minnesota, where as many as 16 inches of snow are forecast. Snow and blowing wind have reduced visibility in parts of South Dakota.

12. The ice has been building up all day in SE Iowa...
We are at the point where small limbs are breaking off, the icicles and chunks are dropping, so it is dangerous to be outside. The pine trees are sagging a lot, but should be OK if the sun doesn't come out and burn them. I'm hoping the temps rise enough to melt this mess overnight. I think we're still slated for upper 40-50s. Go figure!

13. Be safe up there.
We were supposed to get some of that but it did not get cold enough (?in December?) The wind is actually our problem now, I was wind surfing across the muddy dry lot with a bale of hay, it was pretty funny.

With the wind the cold and the ice I hope you all are ready to stay in and ride it out. I do not envy you.

Be safe and warm.

14. Oddly enough for being this far north it usually stays warm enough...
That we get what we're getting, rain and sleet, instead of just snow. From what I recall we haven't had a real hardcore Iowa winter here since the early 90s.

15. We were talking about that the other day.
We had snow the last couple of years, and a few below zero days, but that is all.

It has been about fifteen years since we have had a real winter here. I am used to winter, and prepared for it. I hope this is cyclical, but I fear it is global warming.

Right now, we have an ice storm and we have lost some branches. The roads are practically empty.
