"Uberveillance," "Ambient technology," "Ubiquitous computing," and "Ingestible bugs"
Scary Stuff
Robert Ellis Smith 11.26.07, 6:00 AM ET

Government and corporate officials responsible for compliance with privacy laws in Canada and Europe are using a whole new language in 2007. Much of the jargon has passed by the American public. So listen up. This is important.

At their annual meeting this fall in Montreal, there was little of the traditional talk among the international privacy people about the nuts and bolts of data protection. Instead, there were urgent and distressed discussions about "uberveillance," "ambient technology," "ubiquitous computing," "ingestible bugs" and nanotechnology.

The terms may be overlapping and may in fact be somewhat synonymous. They all refer to an environment in which electronic media are everywhere, gathering and processing information in a seamless way, beyond the control of each human being. The discussions began a few years ago with recognition of a coming "Internet of things," much as public awareness of the Internet began in the 1980s with talk of an "information super highway."

1. sounds cool
scary, but cool.

If you want to be safe, make sure you understand the technology and can do a little hacking if need be.

Otherwise, you'll be on the shit end of the technology stick.

2. I noticed during the Raygun years that anything that the White House and
the administration flunkies didn't want the American people to know about was couched in totally corrupted and abused/misused language and phrases. That way they could also claim that they 'informed' the public of what was going on at the same time they were hiding what they were up to. It was really out-of-control during the David Stockman tenure.

It's only gotten worse.

3. After hearing about things like this
Such as the Government wanting to "redefine" privacy, I have become increasingly paranoid (no, they are not out to get me, yet. lol.) I started researched various ways to stay anonymous and bug free on the web and in my daily life. I am currently investing in RFID proof wallets and passport holders, avoiding using my SSN unless it's absolutely necessary, etc.

4. tinfoil and microwave ovens
should take care of those nasty RFID chips. ...wonder how well they will arc in the micro?

...used to put photographic film in those "x-ray" resitant bags for travel... aluminum foil probably would have worked, too...

..."aw, gee, the chip must have gotten damaged when I accidentally dropped that sledgehammer on it..."
