Albert Arnold "Al" Gore, Jr. (born March 31, 1948) was the forty-fifth Vice President of the United States, serving from 1993 to 2001 under President Bill Clinton. Before that, Vice President Gore served in the U. S. House of Representatives (1977–85) and the U. S. Senate (1985–93), representing Tennessee. A prominent environmental activist, he shares the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change "for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change."

Gore was the Democratic nominee for president in the 2000 election in which he won the popular vote by a plurality. A legal controversy over the Florida election recount, ultimately settled in favor of George W. Bush by the Supreme Court, made the election one of the most controversial in American history.<1><2>

Today, Gore is chairman of the American television channel Current TV, chairman of Generation Investment Management, a director on the board of Apple Inc., an unofficial advisor to Google's senior management, and chairman of the Alliance for Climate Protection.<3> He recently joined venture capital firm, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, to head that firm's climate change solutions group.<4>

As an environmental activist, Gore lectures widely on the topic of global warming, which he calls "the climate crisis."<5> In 2006, he starred in the Academy Award-winning documentary film, An Inconvenient Truth, discussing global warming and the environment. Under his leadership, one of Gore's organizations, Save Our Selves, organized the July 7, 2007 benefit concert Live Earth in an effort to raise awareness about climate change.

While Gore has frequently stated that "I'm not planning to be a candidate again,"<6> there are continuing efforts<7> to convince him to run for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.

1. If there is no frontrunner come the convention, he'll step in
Imagine this scenario -- Edwards wins Iowa, Obama New Hampshire, Hillary gets a few of the SuperDuperTuesday states but she doesn't win all of them. Maybe Biden gets a few, perhaps Richardson too. If there are a couple of large blocs of delegates and an assortment of smaller groups (none of which are willing to throw their support behind another candidate) and an angry floor fight looms ... Then in walks President Gore to reunite the Democratic Party (and, ultimately, the nation).

I can dream, can't I?

...letting your actions and history speak for themselves, saving 100's of millions of dollars, and avoiding the mutual firing squad.

38. Nope, not yet
From a Climate Change blog...

Thursday, November 15, 2007

SACRAMENTO (AP) — California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and former vice president Al Gore are planning a bipartisan presidential forum on energy and climate change in New Hampshire in December, the governor's office confirmed Thursday.

The forum, which is still in the planning stages, is being designed so presidential candidates from both parties will attend. Adam Mendelsohn, a spokesman for the governor, said the format was not completely developed, but the former vice president was handling the Democratic candidates, while Schwarzenegger would handle the Republicans.

5. I'm wondering if he is holding out because of his son.
Hasn't he recently been arrested on drug charges again? He might not want to have to face the scrutiny his son will come under if he announces. Then again, he may not want to inherit this enormous mess and is smarter than we think.

8. I think the window of opportunity has closed for Gore...
...and I think his staff has been telling "Draft Gore" organizers to stand down and stop collecting signatures to put him on the ballot.

Gore never issued a "Sherman Statement," and it doesn't look like he's going to now. And maybe he doesn't even have to anymore.

It's possible; Lennon's corpse STILL hasn't issued a "sherman statement" yet, and with the rock scene this pathetic, he'll have no choice BUT to have his corpse re-animated in time for next year's Grammies.

Everybody cross yer fingers and PRAY extra hard!

40. My dream scenario:
and we are talking dreams, so bite me, fellow DU'ers, if you think I have to decide on one of your candidates any time soon.

Gore announces after New Hampshire, in time to campaign as a write in (if he cannot get on the ballot). He focuses on Tennessee and the South with the untraditional message of America's moral obligation to face the climate crisis, with the tie-in to all of our modern woes being related to failed policy after failed policy by the same people. He comes in with a list of solutions that are out of the (lock)box, and re-ignites American Patriotism in a positive way -- by presenting bold plans requiring Americans to work towards solutions, and to do it together, fast.

I actually hope he campaigns as a write in, and is not on the ballot -- as a way to gauge actual support, and to make them count EVERY vote by hand.

His is a unifying message, that plays well with the liberal base, and the uncrazy evangelicals who believe very strongly in protecting the planet (see Jimmy Carter, and the uncrazy part of Mike Huckabee). It also plays well on Wall Street, which realizes that yes, maybe green can lead to green (money). If he has a strong showing in early Feb, he goes all out, taking his message to the people directly, subverting the MSM. They cost him the election last time, don't expect him to play nice this time. The more they pile on Gore, the better it makes him look, and he knows this. They will try to get him on the same old stuff... but he's a much different man today, and while he was innefective in responding last time... he doesn't even have to this time.

The Democratic field is forced into the uncomfortable position of saying Gore would not make a good President, compared to them, when they cannot come close in terms of experience in or out office -- or in achievements.

Gore is endorsed, almost unanimously, by Europeans, and Australians, and peoples from around the world, as someone who they can trust to lead America out of the Bush years. Their support plays well with all but the rabid right, and catapults him ahead of the other candidates as someone who is smart enough, honest enough, and savvy enough to lead the country in these terrible times.

He is the perfect anti-Bush, a true comeback kid, and a break from the Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton dynastic duo. It's a nice narrative. And yes, I know it is just that.

If things do not go well, he refocuses on the environment, his efforts to promote green companies, and works towards making the nominee adopt a strong stance on Climate Change (most likely demanding that they ratify any Climate Change treaty that he supports). I believe he can become the Anti-Cheney in regards to business. He can make a great deal of money in a green economy -- and feel good doing it. The American dream achieved by bettering the world. How about that.

And that's something we should all embrace whether he runs or not. You don't have to be a Bush or a Cheney to do well in business.
