With the system we have, it's inevitable. When there are several people vying for ONE spot, anyone with half a brain has to know that they WILL "go negative"..They HAVE to..
No one would gove a hoot about a campaign where all the candidates "loved and respected" each other and said stuff like..
"Vote for ME, I'm nice"..
in the olden days, there were backroom meetings, and a candidate was "chosen"..Take it or leave it..
These days, everyone who can manage to raise a few bucks, thinks they could be president..and in doing so, they immediately set out to sabotage anyone else who dares to think the same thing..
In MY perfect world, people would first have to give up any "held" office BEFORE they ran for election.. That would make many of them think long and hard about giving up something sure, for pie in the sky..
The minute they start to run for president, they start NOT doing their day-job..or doing their day job so cautiously that nothing gets done.
then when they drop out, they go back to the senate or congress and have to play nice with people they insulted just a few weeks before...
