If Kucinich wins nomination, Ron Paul could be his veep

Kucinich, the Cleveland congressman running in a longshot bid to become president, suggested it himself today.

"I'm thinking about Ron Paul" as a running mate, Kucinich told a crowd of about 70 supporters at a house party here, one of numerous stops throughout New Hampshire over the Thanksgiving weekend. A Kucinich-Paul administration could bring people together "to balance the energies in this country," Kucinich said.

It would create a stunning, if dizzying, blend of beliefs, wedding two politicians who hold different views on abortion rights, the role of government in providing health care, and the use of government in fostering -- or hampering -- the public's greater good. Those are among the reasons it would never work, said a spokesman for Paul, a congressman and doctor from Texas.

"Dr. Paul and Rep. Kucinich are friends and there is a lot of mutual respect," Paul communications director Jesse Benton said in an e-mail when asked whether a running-mate spot on the Kucinich ticket would be attractive to Paul. "They have worked, and will continue to work, together on the ending the war and protecting civil liberties.

"However, Ron wants to substantially cut the size and scope of the federal government. There are too many differences on issues such as taxes and spending to think a joint ticket would be possible."

1. that just blew Dennis out of the pool for me
Ron Paul is a nutcase. Even considering him as a running mate just catapulted Kucinich into the *whackadoo world* of not getting my vote. Totally lost all his credibility now.

4. I don't think Dennis is really serious about Paul
I think he's looking for votes in NH among people who like Paul. I posted this because of the brouhaha about whether Elizabeth Kucinich was speaking for Dennis when she made her comments. Looks like she was, and that this is a deliberate move on the part of Kucinich.

I'll probably still vote for Dennis, knowing that I'm supporting his ideas about peace and health care, and not really voting for him as a viable candidate. If enough people vote for him in the primaries, it would send a loud message to the party.

2. I don't understand how this is even possible and why
so many people seem to be hyperventilating about this hypothetical.

I think Ron Paul's spokesman has put this issue to rest for good.

And I also want to hear the words come straight out of Kucinich's mouth, as opposed to reading them in a newspaper, perhaps taken out of context.

6. I don't think Paul's spokesperson would have responded
if Kucinich hadn't said it. And I think there are varied reasons why people are reacting: For some it's just that they don't like Kucinich and this gives them a reason to express that hostility. For others it's that it indicates something about Kucinich that they aren't comfortable with. f

12. Yea.....plus I think Kucinich could also be
responding out of frustration.

He says so many things Democrats want to hear, yet people laugh at him and say he can never be president because he looks like an elf, blah blah.

I dunno....I hope he's not really serious.

But I'm not the least bit surprised they're friends because of their anti-war policies, and their respective roles as huge underdogs.

21. For once I agree with you, but remain a DK supporter
"For some it's just that they don't like Kucinich and this gives them a reason to express that hostility"

Definitely likely scenario numero uno.

That aside, I still support DK ... and as far as Ron Paul goes, well, as parallel-universe freaky as things have become in this warped country over the past several years, it's still not strange enough for me to dismiss RP as being "too" strange. I actually agree with some of his views, and I'm as far left liberal as they come.

26. you may well agree with some of David Duke's positions
too. He's also against the Iraq war. Ron Paul holds some truly revolting positions. That he's against the war, isn't enough for me to grant him any credence. Many of those positions are the antithesis of the liberal/progressive political philosophy.

Just sayin'.

7. Its the Plain Dealer
the same newspaper that conspired with bigwigs in an attempt to run Kucinich out of office when he was Mayor as well as lying and running phony poll numbers to destroy every Dem presidential candidate's Ohio campaign in recent history.

They can't be trusted, it might be wise to wait for confirmation from a more reliable source.

15. I can't vote for someone who supports Ron Paul . . . sheesh.
It's idiotic that he would even suggest such a thing. If Dennis isn't going to take his own candidacy seriously, I've got better things to do. I was voting my heart with Dennis at the risk of denying a vote to candidates who might be able to beat Hillary (who I can't stand). If he thinks he's just on an amusing speaking tour, I'll gravitate back to Edwards or Obama.

22. There is no way in HELL the two could appear on a ticket.
Any talk of this by anybody, including DK, is just to draw attention to a campaign shut-out by the media.

Many of the Ron Paul supporters would be Kucinich supporters if the took a look at issues other than war.

I think Kucinich is floating this balloon out to the Paul crazies, so when Paul says it can't happen they may ask why. It could motivate some to look more seriously at Kucinich.

It really is a ridiculous ticket. Can you imagine the Presidential debates. The ticket would sit on the extreme ends of most issues. They are for Universal Single Payer Healthcare and Healthcare Savings accounts.

How can you privatize Healthcare and provide free Healthcare it to every American. It's silly.

Folks, it's not hard to see through Dennis's scam if you try.

He's never going to lead anything, run anything, or be anyone's nominee. So he can say anything he wants to get the attention he desperately craves.

Mostly what he says is what coffee-house liberals want to hear, but if that doesn't work he'll embrace Ron Paul and get some more attention that way.

24. If this is true, it's so depressing...
Kucinich came across as a principled, decent candidate; one who would NOT make compromises with the RW in order to get elected. Now it sounds as though he's prepared to make common cause with a man with a truly evil ideology, either because he considers the war as the *only* issue, or because he is prepared to pay that price to attract a certain constituency.

If so, ugh.

37. I am a progressive liberal, so R.Paul ain't my cup of tea
Being that I am in support of big (liberal) government.

But I do dig R.Paul's authenticity. I don't think he is racist (no more so then Zell Miller).
Since the GOP (and corporations, perhaps most Dem leaders) is already against social services and the EPA, these institutions are pretty much dead anyway.
Clinton really destroyed social services with his watered down welfare to work deal (Tommy Thompsons WI plan is awesome - the national plan that was "based" :eyes: on the WI plan was a GOP wet dream).

So I'll take R.Paul over someone that will carry on the neo-con deal-i-o. But don't worry, I live in NYS - my electoral vote will go to HRC.

The wisdom of Ron Paul

“If you have ever been robbed by a black teen-aged male, you know how unbelievably-fleet-footed they can be.” (Victoria Advocate, 5/24/96)

“Politically sensible blacks are outnumbered as decent people... Given the inefficiencies of what DC laughingly calls the criminal justice system, I think we can safely assume that 95 percent of the black males in that city are semi-criminal or entirely criminal.” (Victoria Advocate, 5/24/96)

"We don't think a child of 13 should be held responsible as a man of 23. That's true for most people, but black males age 13 who have been raised on the streets and who have joined criminal gangs are as big, strong, tough, scary and culpable as any adult and should be treated as such." (Victoria Advocate, 5/24/96)

“Opinion polls consistently show that only about 5 percent of blacks have sensible political opinions, i.e. support the free market, individual liberty and the end of welfare and affirmative action.” (Victoria Advocate, 5/24/96)

“The Criminals who terrorize our cities - in riots and on every non-riot day - are not exclusively young black males, but they largely are.” (Victoria Advocate, 8/7/96)

“There is no such thing as a hate crime.” (Ron Paul: Political Action Report, 1/15/92)

A “free market provides for the poor...” (MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour, 10/24/88 on why he is against government assistance)

"Is bailing out people that chose to live on the coastline a proper function of the federal government?” he asks. “Why do people in Arizona have to be robbed in order to support the people on the coast?" (Washington Post, 7/9/06) (Paul voted against assistance to Katrina and Rita victims, even though some of his district is on the Texas coast.)

“I am opposed to any form of government health insurance as I am opposed to the taxes, regulations, licensing requirements, and monopolistic practices, which keep health costs higher than their true market value.” (CNN Presidential Questionnaire, 1988)

As for Social Security, "we didn't have it until 1935," Paul says. "I mean, do you read stories about how many people were laying in the streets and dying and didn't have medical treatment? …Prices were low and the country was productive and families took care of themselves and churches built hospitals and there was no starvation." (Washington Post, 7/9/06)

“Something must be done to phase out the government’s involvement in Social Security. Pension and annuity plans should be the concern of the people, not the government. Political control of these things will lead only to bankruptcy and misery for retired persons.” (CNN Presidential Questionnaire, 1988M)

“Immigrants can spread diseases for which we may have no immunity. There is also the question of crime and culture. Many immigrants come from countries with different legal structures and are not willing to behave in the way we expect American citizens to behave.” (Ron Paul Political Report, 3/15/92)

"The right of secession should be ingrained in a free society. There is nothing sacred about large units of government. And there is nothing wrong with loosely banding together small units of government. With the disintegration of the Soviet Union, we too should consider it." From his newsletter in the early to mid 90s--sorry I don't have an exact date.

An alliance like this may be the only way to fight the corporate duopoly and give us our country back. An alliance between anticorporate left and anticorporate right. Unless we're we happy with the country the way it is, then carry on with status quo corporate candidates.

1. A level playing field in trade, IE not “free trade”, but FAIR trade.

2. An end to the imperialistic interventionism which has made the United States the mosted hated nation on earth. A series of policies ended that do NOT make us more secure.

3. A national defense based on actually defending the homeland, beginning with the borders.

4. A commitment to the right of personal privacy for Americans.

5. An end to corporate welfare.

6. An end to the unqualified support of Israel’s every action, and using the power of the United States to effect a just enforcement and a permanent settlement of the Israeli Palestinian dispute.

7. A restoration of the public airwaves in the public interest, and new laws including digital transmittals as “public domain”.

8. A commitment to 100 percent renewable energy and energy independence by 2020, a commitment which equals the commitment to put a man on the moon made by JFK.

9. Get us out of Iraq immediately and let the Iraqi's settle their own differences. Both of these men would do this, and end the politics which are keeping us there.
