My Thanksgiving with Bush-loving relatives.
Like many of you, I spent Thanksgiving tolerating a couple of Bush-loving relatives who were there along with all the sane people. And I just can’t comprehend what goes on in their minds. Do they have defective genes? Are they an evolutionary mistake? Have pods snatched their bodies and replaced them? Beats me.

Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that their parents were Nixon supporters even after that nut job was thrown out of the White House. Are stupidity and/or madness hereditary? (Concerning Nixon, the proof that the man was anal retentive is that photo of him walking on a beach in wingtips.)

It’s hard to enjoy a day where you have to bite your tongue to keep the peace. They spouted their mindless talking points at every opportunity while I tried to make small talk about how much I loved the wallpaper.

And almost as disturbing were the relatives who pay no attention to today’s world and don’t even recognize the name Karl Rove. They are mostly older and lived through WWII. Yet, they were clueless as to the current cloud of fascism being cast over them. However, it was neither the time nor place to “educate” them, assuming that would even be possible.

So how did you make out with any brain-dead relatives this Thanksgiving?

drinking conservatice "christian" sorts who think bush is saving our heathen nation and waging a holy war, a crusade for christ if you will, in the middle east... :eyes: :puke:

No, the typo wasn't that bad.

Actually, the dog, is a bit of a bigot. He does not believe in equal hugs and treats for cats.

Don't know where I went wrong with that mutt.

3. my mother in law -- Fox News fan
her two standard lines are, when we bring things to her attention are:

"They just tell you want you want to hear"

"Well, nobody really knows"

Hubby went off this last visit. he told her you can 'really know' if you check multiple sources and fact check.

and that what she remembers as what "Republican" stood for has absolutely nothing to do with what's going on today.

She countered with "Well, I don't really pay that much attention" and hubby came back with "Well we do!"

We were blessed to be able to share Thanksgiving dinner with my son-in-law's very large extended family (probably around 50 of them) who are ALL rabid Democrats, almost as much as I am. Now, THAT'S something to be thankful for, especially here in red Alaska. :)

I can not stand to be around people like that so much that I just start talking louder and louder until someone butts in and stops all political discussion. It's the only way IMHO. I don't want to be around people like that anyway, so I really don't care if it disrupts family unity to some extent.

41. not really
words over the internets are not as substantial as sticks or stones or the opinions of people that you really interact with. They seem to say something about the people who hurl invectives. Somebody who is 100% sure that they have found the TRUTH (in all caps, no less) does not seem very liberal to me. More like a close-minded dogmatic person, and to be fast and loose and overly-broad with harsh invectives seems kinda mean-spirited.

43. There are many issues with which I disagree.
Unprovoked war, torture, the shredding of the constitution, stolen elections, ... well, you get the idea. I have no idea what your position is on these issues. But they are things that cause me to hurl invectives at those who believe in them.

51. Which you'd be right to do, if they actually believed in those things
but we should remember that there are some good people on the other side who are not evil, they are just WRONG. They don't see it the way you phrased it; they don't think they're supporting stolen elections and shredding the Constitution. So hurling invectives at them does little good toward actual change.

Edited on Mon Nov-26-07 02:58 PM by Cyrano
For the time being, I'll stick with hurled invectives. After the tons of poison we've had to take from Bush, Cheney, Rove, Limbaugh, Coulter, et al, I don't think anything I've said comes close to the depths of the sewer they inhabit.

However, let's not forget the American and Iraqi dead and maimed to whom any change of tone would be meaningless. I doubt if the term "WRONG" that you used can be applied to crimes against humanity.

I understand that you are trying to be tolerant and I respect that. But there are some things that are not forgivable.

My Sis was down w/ her hubbster who is VERY religious. Needless to say, we don't have too much in common. I knew walking in that the potential for a protracted debate was high so...i took a nap.

My niece told me "I would have paid to see that conversation. I would have loved to see you tear him to shreds".

Naah. Mom would have just been upset. Easier to just have a nap.

my folks were GOP back in the day. They loved Reagan. Then Bush 1 for his first term. When Bill Clinton ran in 92 they voted for him and have voted for Democrats for President since. As they grew older the more moderate they became now they are just shy of what I would consider to be an actual liberal. So holidays at my place are really nice.

They were all for a national health care system now that the insurance promised by their employers is drying up (they're retired and getting the shaft). Then Grandma went off about greedy corporate execs getting bonuses while they reneg on the promises made to loyal employess.

It was the most fun I've had in ages. These are koolaid drinkers, and even they are starting to see that the system is not made for people like them.

Edited on Sun Nov-25-07 10:52 PM by tammywammy
Because we have more important things to talk about the few times a year all of us get together.

On Thursday, I discussed how I bought a home a few months ago, my SIL is pregnant, how my mom broke her arm. There was a long discussion between my mom and her brothers & sisters on their state of health and what medicines they like. Long talk about my grandpa's health and what the doctor said recently. (Overall, he's doing well, but we think one of his medicines is eliminating his appetite and we're worried that he's not eating enough, but he ate a lot Thursday). I watched all the great-grand kids play in a bounce house and run around the room. Oh and we ate a whole lotta food.

Over 30 people were there and politics never came up. Politics was the last thing on my mind. :)

Edited to add: And yesterday I wore my "I (heart) Obama" shirt yesterday, more because I like it and still, didn't talk politics. :)
