(snow storm)

Many trying to avoid the big travel rush Sunday booked their flights the day before. But little did they know, not everything would go as planned, as a sudden snow storm caused major delays, power outages and cancellations at The El Paso International Airport. “When we got here, we noticed there was no electricity,” Northeast resident Jean Meeks said. Lights went out twice at the airport, forcing the use of backup generators and causing serious travel delays. Both outages lasted about half an hour and passengers had to be checked in manually during that time. “The attendant said it was best to have my son go up early because they had to do everything manually. It was pretty dark in there,” Meeks said. If the power outage wasn't enough to set things back, snowy conditions forced crews to remove ice from every plane leaving the airport. “Until I know he's safely on the plane, at least to Albuquerque, then I'll have to go home and wait until I get his call,” Meeks said. Several other flights were delayed during the day.

Many passengers were moved to Sunday morning flights. Others might have to wait until Monday to leave. “If I get delayed, that would be great because I'd get to spend more time with my parents,” San Antonio resident Brenda Whitaker said. United Airlines and American Airlines were the only ones to cancel flights after their de-icing machines would not work. American Airlines canceled all afternoon flights to Dallas/Ft. Worth.nited Airlines canceled their last flight to Denver. “We'll just have to wait for the next flight and find something to do while we're waiting, but luckily, I have a few extra days off so it's not going to affect me too much,” said Atilla Ozyurt, whose flight was canceled Saturday. Most passengers Saturday didn't find out they were going nowhere until they reached the ticket counter. “They wanted to fly me from El Paso to Las Vegas to Albuquerque to Denver, so I would actually be in a flight for 10 hours for a flight that actually takes less than two hours,” said Richard Ayoub, who also had a flight canceled Saturday.)
