Chretien Proud of Bucking Bush

...Chretien Proud of Bucking Bush

<...>

Former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien says that it was among the great victories in his life that he stood against US pressure to join in the Iraq War.

Uh, the purpose of a wise and mature US foreign policy is to avoid close allies ending up speaking like that. Bush has destroyed half a century of good will among NATO allies, most of whom now think they are better off not following Washington's lead. Leaders who threw in with Bush, like Aznar of Spain and Berlusconi of Italy, have been ushered off the political stage by enraged publics. As someone who grew up when the US (and its currency) was respected by most Europeans and other North Americans, I am sad to see the way W. has debased our position and humiliated our country.

Don't for get Howard of Australia:

"How bad was it for the conservatives in Australia? The votes are still being tallied, but it appears that Howard will be only the second sitting prime minister in 106 years of Australia’s federal government to lose his own seat in Parliament."

3. Chretien.....
There are allot of things he did that one is not proud of - but this was a good thing - and one many canadians agree with - however....his sleight of hand has embroiled us in Afghanistan, and that is not popular up here, despite what pundits might say.

Now we have Harper....the guy whose face is permanently tattoed with the buttcheeks of George W. Bush.

Had Chretien been a better leader, the liberals would not have collapsed under Martin - because of the infighting between the two....and hence we would not be stuck with Harper.

Harper would sell us all out to the Americans in a buttsqueeze fart. He is more an American statesman than a National Prime Minister. Everything he does goes by what George wants or agrees with - regardless of whether it is in the national interest of Canada.

7. He was right to send us to Afghanistan
the Taiban should have been over-thrown by the civilized world years before 9/11. Afghanistan might not have been carried out even remotely properly, and it might be all fucked up now, run by drug lords and awash in tribalism and opium, but kicking the Taliban was the right course of action.

10. Yeah, that was Chretien's one good decision.
It saved lives and money. Granted, he then spent the money elsewhere and funneled it back to his own party, but at least we still have the lives saved.

5. What I fear most
is that the Bush legacy will become the US legacy if these criminals are not removed and punished.

12. It's too late. The "re-election" of the chimp in 2004 negated our last
shred of hope for respect on the world stage.

6. Chretien was an idiot
in 2001 when I moved to the US as a visiting member of the faculty at Yale, the Canadian dollar was only worth 62 cents. Now, the tables are turned and my Canadian student loans, debt consolidation and child support payments are rapidly becoming unaffordable. Chretien's so called wisdom has personally cost me nearly 100k in lost income due to the change in the exchange rates.

If I could build a time machine, I would go back and tell Chretien that the best thing to do would be not only to go to Iraq, but to tell Bush... Hey, Dude, you Americans send 1 guy to Iraq, we Canadians are going to send 10...

if he had followed that prudent plan, the Canadian dollar would be hovering at around the 9 cent mark and I'd have paid off all my debts and obligations.

Stupid Chretien, worrying about his legacy and the right thing to do. Asshole.

8. Chretien was an idiot because the Canadian dollar is worth more than the U.S. dollar?
The rest is the same flawed logic.

Chretien was absolutely correct not to go to Iraq.

You can take up your money issues with Bush.

9. Uh... you know I was being sarcastic
No one on earth actually thinks that the Iraq war was a good idea. Not even repukes really think that. I doubt even Bush thinks that.

11. Bush thinks the Iraq war is perfect
And so do his money hungry cronies. THAT is what it was all about after all. Oil prices have skyrocketed and the war profiteers are waddling with profit. They are very very very pleased with the outcome.
