What Kevin Rudd's Australia Win Means

Australia's Shadow Climate Change Minister and former Midnight Oil Singer Peter Garrett

......................

Beyond ending the lockstep dance between George Bush and John Howard, Kevin Rudd's win also means that Peter Garrett, former lead singer for Midnight Oil, will be Australia's next Climate Change Minister -- and Kim Beazley, former head of the Labor Party, will most likely be the next Australian Ambassador to the United States.

I think Beazley will become a real force in Washington circles and will be welcomed enthusiastically. I know he'll throw great parties.

And on climate change policy, I've never heard anyone more articulate and compelling than Peter Garrett who I met and listened to carefully last September in Melbourne.

4. Buying bread from a man in Brussels,
He was six-foot-four and full of muscles,
I said “Do you speak my language?”
He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich,
And he said
“I come from a land down-under,…
Where beer does flow and men chunder,

11. wrong band
you are quoting Men at Work, not Midnight Oil. Big difference. LOL

It is still not set in stone that Garret will be Minister for Environment (climate change). He didn't really have a good campaign and towards the end was hidden from view lest he open his mouth and put his foot in it.

He is passionate about environmental issues but has had to hold his tongue since joining the Labor Party and entering parliament and toe the party line. Many on the left and within the Green movement consider that he sold out by joining Labor.

Rudd will still make him a minister but I think in something less demanding and high profile - such as arts.

But of course the main thing, and a beautiful thing it is, is that Howard is gone and in all likelihood lost his seat as well. Labor looks like winning 89-59-2, with a senate having balance of power shared between Family First - our very own fundies, and an independent from South Australia whose claim to fame is try to get rid of poker machines aka slot machines.

Peace
