Sesame Street is for adults only now (WTF?)
Sunny days! The earliest episodes of “Sesame Street” are available on digital video! Break out some Keebler products, fire up the DVD player and prepare for the exquisite pleasure-pain of top-shelf nostalgia.

Just don’t bring the children. According to an earnest warning on Volumes 1 and 2, “Sesame Street: Old School” is adults-only: “These early ‘Sesame Street’ episodes are intended for grown-ups, and may not suit the needs of today’s preschool child.”

Say what? At a recent all-ages home screening, a hush fell over the room. “What did they do to us?” asked one Gen-X mother of two, finally. The show rolled, and the sweet trauma came flooding back. What they did to us was hard-core. Man, was that scene rough. The masonry on the dingy brownstone at 123 Sesame Street, where the closeted Ernie and Bert shared a dismal basement apartment, was deteriorating. Cookie Monster was on a fast track to diabetes. Oscar’s depression was untreated. Prozacky Elmo didn’t exist.

Nothing in the children’s entertainment of today, candy-colored animation hopped up on computer tricks, can prepare young or old for this frightening glimpse of simpler times. Back then — as on the very first episode, which aired on PBS Nov. 10, 1969 — a pretty, lonely girl like Sally might find herself befriended by an older male stranger who held her hand and took her home. Granted, Gordon just wanted Sally to meet his wife and have some milk and cookies, but . . . well, he could have wanted anything. As it was, he fed her milk and cookies. The milk looks dangerously whole.

3. Oh, bull-fucking-shit. Can we fire the fucking nannies already?
The first seasons of Sesame Street were FAMILY entertainment. They were designed for children AND parents to watch together, so there are things for kids AND adults. I'm so fucking sick of fascist nannies set on controlling everything in the world "for the children," though no one seems to benefit from the idiotic pap in their wake.

5. That's 'cause the nannies all have filthy minds and they're projecting onto the kids...
What child would ever imagine that Bert and Ernie's relationship was anything other than exactly what was portrayed? Or Tinky Winky? No, that takes a sexually repressed, sick adult.

Austrailia's "Ho, Ho, Ho" incident last week is a prime example.

6. About 6 or 7 years ago my childhood fave shows of
Sesame street, the Electric Company, Zoom, And Mr. Rogers were all airing on NOGGIN.

Sadly they aren't showing them anymore. I really wish, now, that I had recorded them.

11. And it's all because of that character Hyde the Weenie
You never knew where he'd show up. And his acting was kinda stiff at times.

15. This is just insane. And I'm confused...
in the OP, there's a quote in the linked article that says some of the skits were re-shot. So, why would they alter the originals if they are intended for adults?

13. Sesame Street is a gateway drug.
It led me first to Captain Kangaroo, then the Electric Company and then, oh my God, ZOOM! Now I am a latte-sipping, NPR-listening, PBS-watching liberal. I need help.

16. Sesame Street has long been under attack by rghtwing and they've succeeded in limiting
how much it's shown on PBS now . . .

and really creepy animation programs --- and freakish puppets and dialogue have moved in ---

Sad for the ids ---

And, of course, this has happened because Sesame St worked to educate kids at home --

help bolster what they learned in school --- help set them up for school. EVERYONE ---

Available to all.

PBS has been under the rightwing whip for two decades or more ---
very little of it left --- and more garbage moving in every minute ---
