San Francisco bans plastic bags
San Francisco bans plastic bags

From today (Tuesday) large grocery stores in the city can no longer use traditional plastic bags, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.

The ban follows a city ordinance passed earlier this year.

But smaller grocery stores and other retailers can still hand out the bags.

In six months' time, pharmacy chains in the city will also be banned from using plastic bags.

Fines start at $100 for a first offence, increasing to $200 and then $500.

The policy is the first to be enacted in the US, says the newspaper. The city of Oakland has passed a similar ban that comes into effect next year.
