Can ANY candidate win without "the heartland vote"? (Hillary or Rudy)

I was just wondering if either of the party's frontrunners can win the national election without the support of Middle America. I just dont see 'most' people voting for either Rudy (Mr. New York) or Hillary. I am not bashing either candidate, but I do wonder if "America" will vote for for either candidate from New York. A senator from New York versus the former mayor of New York.

I have asked several of my RW relatives here in Georgia and none of them like Rudy or Mitt. I still dont see Thompson (many in my fam's preference because if his pitiful "reagan-ish-ness") getting past the first few caucases. I think that Huckabee will do better here in the deep south because of his position as a 'reverend'.

Whomever wishes to win "the Heartland" needs to get a good Southerner as a running mate.

said he wouldn't vote for Rudy because he "wants to take my guns away". So if Guiliani is the repuke candidate, I don't see him getting many votes from the traditional base.

Any candidate running for office will, sad to say, either be a Southerner or have a Southern running mate. The reason I say "sad to say" is that I know too many people, including local Democratic leaders, who have flatly stated that they won't vote for a ticket unless a Southerner is on it.
