Bloggers to get caught in Eckersley lawsuit net?

Scott Eckersley has already said he's planning on suing Gov. Matt Blunt's office for defamation of character, but he said today there might be other defendants.

Eckersley, who maintains he was fired after advising the governor's office against deleting e-mails, says he's the victim of a smear campaign by Blunt's office now. The administration sent a letter to reporters painting Eckersley as a troubled employee who was an aficionado of a "group sex" website and whose e-mails contained "unclear references to drug use."

But Eckersley also was the subject of several Republican-affiliated blog postings, which he said attacked him as a sexual deviant, among other things.

“We plan on suing the blog sites that carried this false material,” he said, without naming names.

3. What if someone sued DU because an anonymous poster made some accusations

I think this might be pretty dangerous as far as inhibiting some free speech. I suppose they could make the Administration of DU give up the poster's true identity. :shrug: The article said he was suing the blog and not the writer or writers on the blog and that is why concerns me.

5. DU is a messageboard, not a blog.

Blogs have limited, approved posters.
Message boards allow anyone that registers to post.

Also, if asked, the DU Admins are likely to remove offending materials, whereas RW-Douchebags are not.

And they immediately began slamming this guy as soon as this scandal hit the media. It was swift boat time in MO. One of the bloggers (the worst one, IMO) has deleted everything on his blog that predates this scandal. Years worth of entries.

Really, most of these blogs are authored by one person and every once in awhile there are comments. But the content on the blog can be traced to one person. They aren't like DU or FR.

I said it would be thrown out. From what I interperated from the story, he thinks the blogs and the Governor were in cahoots. That is something very hard to prove the merits.

They posted some pretty nasty accusations about his sexuality, etc, that had nothing to do with the deleted email story (that is what the governor is in trouble for). So his case against the blogs is DIFFERENT and not connected to the lawsuit against the governor.

At least, that is how it looked to me.
