Pope calls for complete ban on landmines
Pope calls for complete ban on landmines

VATICAN CITY, Nov 18 (Reuters) - Pope Benedict on Sunday called for a total global ban on the use of landmines.

Eighty percent of states have signed the 1997 convention banning antipersonnel mines. However, the United States, China and Russia are among 38 nations that have not signed the Ottawa treaty, which was the first global accord against landmines.

" ... These weapons, which continue to cause victims, including many children, should be completely banned," Benedict said at his weekly Angelus blessing.

2. Well done
give kudos where they should be given. I disagree with him on a host of other issues, however.

5. Great! Good for him!
I'm no fan of the present, and far too RW, Pope; but landmines are an abomination, and there may be some people who will listen to the Pope on this subject, when they wouldn't to someone else.
