98,000 pounds of frozen sausage roll products contaminated

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/breaking_news/story/310083.html

Sausage rolls shipped to Florida recalled

A Texas company is recalling about 98,000 pounds of frozen sausage roll products -- some of them distributed through centers in Florida -- because of concerns about potential listeria contamination.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the voluntary recall by Double B Foods Inc. on Thursday. The frozen sausage rolls were produced on various dates between Oct. 25 and Nov. 6, the USDA said. The company found the potential problem during an in-plant testing program.

The company said there have been no reports of illness.

In addition to being sold in Texas, the products were distributed to institutions, catalog sales and distribution centers in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania.

Consumption of food containing Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a rare but potentially fatal disease.

1. WTF is a "sausage roll product?"
:scared:

Man oh man, as if real sausage isn't bad enough? Is there actually some sub-genre of sausage that is so nasty it doesn't even fit the USDA definition of "sausage?"

I'm getting sick just thinking about what must be in that stuff!

3. A pepperoni roll?
In the Pittsburgh area we have the pepperoni roll which is a nice greasy hunk of pepperoni baked into a bit of bread dough. Very tasty, very bad for you.

5. I love local food puzzles!
I remember going to Montreal and seeing "smoked meat" shops everywhere. Apparently "smoked meat" is the local favorite north of the border. We asked a guy in one of the shops what, exactly, was smoked meat. "What kind of 'meat' is it?" He looked at us as if we were nuts..."HUH? What do you mean? It's MEAT!" We didn't try it.

8. It's mystery meat!
But what is sausage anyway? It's all mystery meat.

From the photo of the sausage roll down-thread, I must say that I've never seen anything like that sold locally. Must be a regional thing.

12. No problem with "cook only" meat

WASHINGTON — One federal inspector calls it the "E. coli loophole." Another says, "Nobody would buy it if they knew."

The officials are referring to the little-discussed fact that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has deemed it acceptable for meat companies to cook and sell meat on which E. coli, a bacterium that can sicken and even kill humans, is found during processing.

"All the product that is E. coli positive, they put a 'cooking only' tag on it," said one inspector, who like other federal inspectors interviewed asked to remain anonymous for fear of losing their jobs. "They will test, and everything that's positive, they slap that label on."

"The government keeps putting out that we've reduced E. coli by 50 percent and all of that," said an inspector. "And we haven't done nothing. We've just covered it up."
