1. I never knew about them till I moved to the UK

The MRLP was started by a guy called Screaming Lord Sutch back in 1963. I saw Lord Sutch on the news one night and asked my husband, "Who is THAT?"



He was a character. I suspect he would have loved the Church of the FSM and become a Pastafarian, were he still alive. But ironically he suffered from depression and hanged himself in 1999. Although he never won an election, Lord Sutch was such a colorful fixture in British politics for over 30 years that his death was widely mourned.

We certainly have nothing like Lord Sutch or the MRLP here and I agree, we could use their like to lighten things up and refocus us on what's really important.

2. Here in Canada, we have the Rhinoceros Party

Well, actually the Neorhino Party:

They're a rebirth of the original party. Their campaign consisted of only one main principle - they promise not to keep any promises.

The Neorhinos have some interesting platform planks this year:

1)"take away soldiers' weapons, replace them with paintball guns, and repaint Havana
2)a national gas barbecue registry (a dig at our controversial gun registry)

and

3)a guaranteed weekly orgasm.
