1. I just did a head gasket replacement on my 99 Subie Outback
Edited on Sun Nov-18-07 07:13 PM by hlthe2b
There is nothing out there that meets my needs and I'm not paying such big $$ for such old technology (in terms of alternative fuels or hybrids), so I'm just going to do a little preventive maintenance and let it "rip" another 125K or so... I may break down and go for a used Prius if I become convinced I'd do ok in ice and snow, but right now, like many, I've saving every $$ I can. With rare exceptions I drive ONLY the 36 miles round trip to work and back and walk everywhere else from home in the evenings and on weekends. I only wish I could walk/bike to work in fair weather or there was a reasonable mass transit alternative.

The economy sucks, but beyond the corrupt and incompetent administration, there is lots of blame to go around, corporation-wise.

I'd just imagine there are a lot of Americans who feel as I...

11. that's how I feel
I hope hybrids will improve significantly or hydrogen will come on or something. I don't *need* a new car and why would I buy pretty much what I already have only a couple years newer when my car runs perfectly fine?

2. With crude closing in at $100, why would people buy a new Hummer now?

4. Why can't an American car company build the modern day equivalent
of the Volkswagon?

Something everyone on minimum wage can easily afford? (it's not intended as a snark, but I can understand how some might view it as such)

5. well, like the Germans when the VW was created, we have the
dictator... Only our dictator doesn't encourage production for the "masses." :eyes:

6. I was going to wait another
year to buy a new car, but I might be able to get a great deal now. And due to my new job, I'll need a 4-wheel SUV. With slow sales and high gas prices, maybe I could get a hell of a deal now instead of waiting.

7. I wonder how many people are trapped in their cars
They can't trade them in, they can't sell them, they haven't the money to buy something easy on fuel. There must be many people stuck in cars, suvs, and trucks.

8. Yup.. which is why I'm cutting my losses and fixing up the
already paid for vehicle...

To shell out $22-24K for a new Prius, even with its excellent mileage return, is frightening to me. What good is it if gas becomes absolutely prohibitive or even rationed if the worst worldwide crisis were to occur?

9.  I haven't bought a car since 1973
And I still drive it and probably will as long as it holds up . A 1973 VW squareback and it keeps on going . I have never found the urge to spend money or make payments on something that won't do anything mine won't already do .

10. Let's see: ... What was happening 15 years ago ....
Oh yeah ....

Yet another example of a GOP economy running STRAIGHT INTO THE GROUND ....

1992 was the end of the Reagan/Bush 'Revolution' .... SAME diminished wealth for families .... SAME self serving economic policies that favor their rich buddies at the expense of EVERYONE else ...

Once the GOP get's a hold of an economy .. it is just a matter of time until it runs out of gas .....
