Michael Moore received the Key to the City of Traverse City Michigan last night from city mayor Michael Estes during the opening celebration of a vintage downtown movie theater with current Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm (D) and former Governor William Milliken in attendance.
A six week $850,000 renovation had just been completed, and the roughly 600 seat theater was filled to capacity. Ticket prices ranged from $100 to $1000 with some reserved for individuals who entered a drawing to purchase tickets for $10.
The Midwestern premier of the new Dreamworks movie "Kite Runner" was shown along with vintage clips from the 1916 and 1942 opening and re-opening of the theater.
The State Theater was donated to the Traverse City Film Festival by the Rotary Club (very conservative here) which Michael Moore founded with other members Doug Stanton (author In Harms Way) local photographer John Robert Williams, and film makers Larry Charles and Terry George.
Local residents embrace the annual Film Festival, and the large local democratic activist network is particularly thrilled.
The movie Kite Runner is a must see for anyone interested in understanding the Muslim faith, and the traditional Afghan culture beyond the militaristic propaganda of wartime pundits like Wolf Blitzer or those at fox news.
