3. It just kind of creeped up on me.
Living in Alaska for the past 32 years, I've noticed big changes ... fall comes later, there are trees where there didn't used to be any, winters aren't as cold, glaciers are melting. You can't help but notice it here.

4. I noticed when I no longer could cross country ski here in
Lexington Ky.

I also noticed later that the usual mid Oct cold snap was late.

5. There was a great documentary
about an indigenous group in South America about 15 years ago. They allowed an American journalist into their territory only to warn him abour dangers in the future - so he could warn everyone else.
They told him the snow pack in the mountains became depleted over the years and their rivers were running dry.

They tried to tell him that it was due to the activities of the white man that the earth was dying.

I hiked up to Grinnell Glacier in Glacier National Park.

at that time it was a half mile wide, now it is gone, draw your own conclusion.

10. When I crashed on the other side of the Brooks Range in Alaska in 1977
in a helicopter while sampling for the Dept of Energy, surveying for Uranium...

Auto-rotated from 3000 feet into a melted permafrost bubble, like hitting a waterbed, kept our teeth from entering our skulls and rattling around in there like popcorn. Global warming saved my life, wrote a book about it, all done now but the Publishing, but it's a goddamn good book if I do say so myself :)

13. you got it :)
It's called "The Jesus Bolt", that bit of metal at the top of a chopper that holds all the blades together.. As the 'Nam pilots we flew with used to say, "when the Jesus bolt falls out, the next person you'll be talking to will be Jesus, Himself..."

Don't worry, I get the book or movie deal I'm hoping for I'll be shouting it from the DU rooftops :)

11. started learning about it as a student, back in 1986-87

I later went on to do postgraduate research on some of the potential impacts. I've got to admit, it's the one thing I wish I could be entirely wrong about. We're already seeing some of my tentative wildfire projections starting to be confirmed (in my study area in northern Canada).

14. Since the 70s
I read up on it's beginnings along with the environmental degradation of our water and air when I was 12 years old, and have made it my primary focus ever since. And yes, I have been working to wake people up about it and have been successful at it now thanks to Al Gore bringing it to the consciousness of the world the way he did in An Inconvenient Truth. It's about time more people started listening about this, because we are thirty years behind where we should be today in addressing it.

16. Do you think the changes Gore is recommending are sufficient --- ???
How about nationalizing our natural resources --- ?

How about getting Electric Cars on our highways over a 5 year period ---
replace ALL gas-guzzlers--???

See: "Who Killed the Electric Car?"

If you think independently about what is needed --- what are you answers you get?

19. When Al Gore came out with "Earth in The Balance".
Edited on Sun Nov-18-07 06:40 PM by Uncle Joe
Up until recently it was an uphill struggle convincing any of my co-workers this was for real. There was a huge gulf between what the scientists were saying and the media was reporting, and this made it infinitely more difficult to influence anyone's opinion. Then it was topped out with the corporate media slander of Al Gore's credibility when the media bore false witness against him by repeating and magnifying the Republican lie of "Al Gore claimed to have invented the Internet".

Amy mature adult armed with the facts of the actual Wolf Blitzer interview that started that slander and libel would know the media betrayed the American People's trust and that's how we ended up with Bush, that's why we're in Iraq, that's why the Constitution has been trashed, etc. I believe the only reason they're addressing global warming climate change now is because it has become too big of an issue for them to ignore and or hide anymore and Bush is a living example of how they deceived the American People regarding his abilities, trustworthiness and qualifications for the job and this in turn has hurt the media's credibility with the American People.

I don't believe the media have given up manipulating the American People, they're just changing tactics.

We need drastic changes ---

nationalizing our oil -- taking it out of the hands of a few private families

ELECTRIC CARS -- See: "Who Killed The Electric Car?"

We can replace every gas-guzzler in 5 years ---

We can subsidize both ends --- mfg and purchase ---

ALSO: I'm shocked that no one wants to hold the oil industry accountable for their decades of propaganda --- lies and distortion of scientific evidence !!!

Or --- the corporate media ---

In fact, ExxonMobil --- who profitted at 36 Billion last year? --- is still in the propaganda game --- even after being cited by the Royal Academy of Scientists this year for their lies ---
and the Academy making clear that ExxonMobil must STOP!

21. 31 years ago. My best friend's father worked in Antarctica studying
the global climate through ice core samples. I overheard him speaking to a colleague about it several times when he was home for a few months. I was only a child at the time, but the conversations I heard made me decide never to have children once I became an adult.

24. This is embarrassing, but I don't think it ever really occurred to me that it was, you know,
going to destroy civilization until, er, um, 2005. When I noticed it was a fuck of a lot hotter in my city than it had ever been before.
