DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Jackson Browne says that Democrat John Edwards is the most progressive candidate with a chance at winning the White House, and that he would do the most for working-class Americans.

"It's a challenge to hook yourself up to what a politician says he's going to do, and see if he's going to do it," the singer-songwriter said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "I think it's a really critical time in our country and our world, and I think that working people need a champion, and I think that John Edwards is that person."

Famous for hits including "Running on Empty" and "The Pretender," Browne will be joined by Grammy Award-winning colleague Bonnie Raitt next week at five of Edwards' campaign stops in Iowa.

The two are co-founders of Musicians United For Safe Energy, along with Graham Nash

Did Jackson Browne really beat up Darryl Hannah? (Also known as "the question that won't go away".)

Answer: NO. Both Jackson and Darryl have denied those old tabloid reports at one time or another. The fact is that Jackson telephoned the police that night. Police on the scene that night have also denied any such violence. The details of that infamous night will never be known by anyone except for the two parties involved. Jackson is a very private individual and we should all respect his desire for privacy. Whatever really happened that night is none of our business. To those who are stuck for an answer when someone raises the question, I usually respond with a statement about not believing what you read in the tabloids and being amazed how otherwise intelligent people can believe the kind of trash they read there.

This issue was raised again with respect to questions about Joni Mitchell's song "Not To Blame" from her 1994 album TURBULENT INDIGO, which not only accused Jackson of beating up Darryl Hannah but implies that he drove his first wife to suicide. Jackson's public response was that "Joni hasn't been very well and has lots of problems."

And unfortunately, the issue was raised yet again in a 2003 made for TV tabloid film about John F. Kennedy Jr., whom Darryl dated after breaking up with Jackson. Both Jackson and Darryl issued public statements against the show, with Darryl going so far as to say not one thing about any reference to her was accurate. Jackson threatened legal action if it was rebroadcast without editing out the reference to him. After investigating, the station offered public appologies for the error and deleted the scene from future broadcasts.

5. I regard Jackson Browne as a prophet.

Not equal to, but vastly superior than, Jeremiah and the other Biblical heavyweights.

His music and lyrics require concentration and commitment and his politics have been steadfastly humane since the very early part of his career. Very likely before that.

This evening I am just now learning of his presidential nominee endorsement and by god, I like it.

with environmental issues and political issues for over 30 years! He's likely an intelligent man, so I would give him more credit than that.

I never had enough info on Clark to make a clear decision regarding his plans.

and he did run for president last time, so his views are out there for people to find. He is quite an intelligent, caring human whom I greatly admire, and whose opinion I trust. Not heard much outside of music from Jackson Browne.

If you want to hear it you have to pause the left hand video and start the right hand one. . .er. . .at least I had to.

It's ironic that in some ways it's more powerful acoustically than electrically perhaps because the power of his voice and lyrics really are prenounced.

I was a cook in downtown Des Moines in the mid 90's, and he played a concert at one of the nearby venues. We got our asses kicked all night long. Jackson Brown really pissed me off that night.

But I still think Late for the Sky is an awesome fucking song.
