,...to invest their lives in something greater than themselves, I'd demand a memorial that named each and every one who sacrificed on behalf of interests beyond their own. My name would only be presented in honor of all those people.

Which brings me to ask this question: why aren't those who have sacrificed their lives for peace and equality given a memorial akin to those who sacrificed for war?

War memorials are not there to honor the dead from the last war, they're there to inspire potential soldiers for the next one.

If that happens to be war, then that's the choice of a democratic nation. It's called "service" - a word that seems to escape the comprehension of many. It's NOT those who serve who're choosing to engage in wars - it's the People.

Even in walking away from our duties of self-governance in a democracy, we are making a choice - and still bear responsibility. In 1776, the "Founders" set an example of taking responsibility for their own self-governance. Why do we think something less will do?
