1. When Boeing bought Rockwell ...

They made all the employees sign off on this, including the fact that Boeing intended to scrutinize messages from private email accounts accessed from work ....

You have to remember:

Boeing own's the computer, the network, and the internet server : EVERYTHING you download or 'surf' at an organization like Boeing is actually funneled through THEIR servers before it ever reaches your workstation.

They arent snooping on individual workstations but snooping in their own web servers that send content to individual workstations as it is sent, or afterwards ... They do this primarily to detect 1) inappropriate content ... and 2) to make sure proprietary information is not being sent out ...

I have no problem with a company like Boeing seeking to know if users were downloading porn on THEIR network ..... IMHO, Workers dont have an absolute right to access such content in the workplace, and a company has an obligation from a sexual harassment standpoint to make sure none is accessed in the workplace ....

In any case: It would be a mistake to believe that messages sent from a computer in a large corporation could ever be considered 'private' .... All content is exposed to scrutiny until it arrives at your 'private' workstation .... There is no privacy there ...

ALL the other actions by Boeing I would question ..... Only in the most egregious cases could such 'spying' in the public sphere be justified ..... and only very rarely .... Things like theft, sabotage or criminal enterprise are legitimate reasons to watch employees, and like parents who set up cameras to watch Nannies with their own children, it is assumed that such observation WILL happen in the workplace for those reasons ...

But expecting privacy on company networks is asking too much of a system that hides nothing ....

2. Companies have been recording employee communication since the days of the plugin switchboard. This

is nothing new nor in any illegal.

3. Not just Boeing.

I work for a small wire products company. Nothing secret, just shelves and freezer baskets. One of the bigwigs decided to put up spy cameras all over the place. It's insulting. I want to ask him if he had dreams of being in the CIA.

I keep thinking "How Republican of him."

And what do they get out of it? As long as an employee is doing a good job, what in the personal life could they do anything about anyway?
