southerners are not welcome at D.U.

Keep wondering why Democrats continue to lose the south's vote.

Most of it is rural southern, and then there is Northern Virginia. Northern Virginia is most definitely not "southern", but a lot of the rest of the state it.

34. People outside the south don't really understand why that flag
is used in the south. It's not a statement of bigotry so much as a statement of independence, a statement that one won't be pushed around. Consider the history of the south, lost their war for independence and then got cursed with decades of carpetbaggers who came in and tried to change everything the people didn't particularly want changed, whether or not it was working for them. That flag is a symbol of defiance, a symbol that they're clinging to the things in the past that they treasure most.

Above the Mason Dixon line, that flag is a great twit indicator. You see it, you know there's a twit nearby. That's not always true in the south.

I lived in the south. Their culture was incompatible with mine and as soon as I saved enough money, I left like I was shot out of a cannon. However, I did get a decent read on a lot of the symbolism down there.

The display of the confederate battle flag isn't always what northerners think it is.

8. And because Fresno, CA is home of FR,
ALL Fresno residents are stupid, ignorant, backward hick freepers. Actually, that applies to all rural dwellers -- at least according to some around here. I was told recently that: "everyone knows Fresno is dirty and stinky but you." The point is that too many people on DU are geographical elitists and they seem to be pretty damned proud of it at that.

20. It was a point of contention earlier
And I'm glad you don't :)

It's just earlier, that was a point of contention - some Southern State DUers stated that the flag represented Southern Heritage, that it wasn't racist, etc, and that an attack on the flag bearing the cross of St Andrew was an attack on Southerners.

Just clarifying that.

35. I disagree with those who defend the confederate flag but
to some extent I understand it. My great grandfather fought in the civil war....not because he wanted to, but because he had no real choice. He certainly never owned slaves. He didn't own much of anything.

His mother was a full blooded Monacan Indian so he knew all about prejudice and certainly didn't support it. He was a poor southerner caught up in a crazy war and he fought to protect his home because he was conscripted.

Hmmm. Sounds to me as if he was only referring to the Southern Bushies, not you.

But you CHOSE to take it personally.

I won't sit here and deny that there is some straight-up Southern bashing that goes on here, and it isn't right. But in ANY large, unregulated group of people you are going to find all types.

What gets me is that, even when people aren't bashing all Southerners, or just bringing up the inconvenient truths of Southern History (and yes, there are PLENTY of such truths about the North, too), so many of DU's Southern contingent takes it personally.

What's all that about?

18. Jesus H. Christ on a jumped-up pogo stick, you are so touchy!
Edited on Sat Nov-17-07 01:11 PM by tom_paine
Wanna know how touchy? EVERY time I wirte about the sad realities of the Bushfederacy, built so closely in philosphy and principle onthe Old Confederacy, and having said Old Confederacy as it's strongest power base and the Headquarters of Bushie Evil, not to mention it's most powerful stronghold, you know what I write?

NOTE: This post is NOT meant to desparage all of the South or all Southerners. There are many fine, good, and decent people in the South, as there are everywhere.

From what I can see, to touchy Southerners, reality is too much, even knowing that someone is not speaking about YOU PERSONALLY, apparently is in fact, speaking to you personally.

So, here, please allow me to represent a more pleasing version of reality, in the hopes that the democrats won't lose to the NeoBushConRebfederates in the NeoBushConRebfederacy.

The South has always been the most progressive section of the nation. When in the 1830s, Yankees wished to continue chattel ownership of human beings, 100% of Southerners rose up to decry this moral bankruptcy.

Following The War Between The States, which the slave-owning Yankee aggressors called the "Civil War", even though that's not it's right name, Yankees everywhere killed thousands of carpetbagging Southern Liberals and Uppity Negroes by lynching and murder for nearly a century.

Brave Southerners, unfiied in their opposition to this race-based cruelty, dared to conduct inter-racial bus rides through the Yankee North, often being beaten and always being harrassed for their troubles. Yankee segregationists killed and killed and killed their Southern enemies: hanging them, lynching them, burning their chruches while secretly having sex with their attractive relatives.

Finally, in 1980, the Republic Party, realizing that it had a great untapped resource in racist Yankees, implemented The Northern Strategy. This kicked off in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the site of a hideous triple-homicide of Southernerns trying to secure the votes for their African-American bretheren, who had long been denied that right by murderous Yankees.

In 1980, in Philadelphia, Ronald Reagan did not overtly celebrate the murder of these Liberal Southerners, yet his presence there alone, his advisors knew, would be a coded message to Bushie Northerners, many of who kept up their hatred of the victorious South more than a century after the end of the War Between The States, that it was OK to support the Republic Party now.

And flock they did to the Republic ranks, these rascist Northerners. So much so that the North is now the headquarters and stronghold of Bushevism as it prepares for it's final destruction of Old America.

But this is not to disparage all Northerners as a whole group, for there are good people everywhere, as is always the case, regardless of the unpleasant realities that are associated with the North and the fact that those unpleasantrealities still make up a major portion of the character of Northern societies.

Is that a better, more pleasing reality for you?

24. Bite me.....
you don't know anything about me.

Touchy? You try putting up with being a liberal "looney" in a red state and then putting up with the constant disparagement from the very group you are supposed to be aligned with.

If you put a disclaimer then you are the only one. How often do you see a northerner bashing thread? Like maybe NEVER?

33. Consider yourself bitten...
And, as they say, if you want to see a Northerner-bashing thread then make it happen!

I do feel your pain in taking it from both sides, and I empathize. I don't have an answer for you. because people will be people (regionalistic, provincial, parochial...no matter WHERE you come from)

I can give you a start on the whole Northerner-bashing thing, being one myself and also not being so touchy that I cannot see the shit stniking in my own pond simply because it's my own.

Here we go:

Northerners are so contemptuous of Southern racism, but you NEVER mention the state of cities like Boston, New York, or Baltimore, which has as much or more overt racism as the South.

The City of Brotherly Love? One of the least brotherly places you will ever find, rife with the n-word.

Northerners bitch about the Atlanta Water Crisis and blame Southern Developers, but Northern Developers do the same damned thing up there, but no one bashes the "Northern Developers" like they do the "Southern Developers".

Historically, Northerners criticize the Institution of Slavery but stood behind the idea of Wage Slavery and are curiously silent about the epidemic of Children Wage Slaves that permeate dthe North throughout the time that it was ostensibly fighting for people's freedom while conveniently ignoring what was going on it it's backyard?

Finally, I would like to personally wonder how many of my posts you have read in your time here at DU before noticing my disclaimer (which I have been using since the first waves of "Southern Bashing" and "Southern touchiness" in response, since about mid-2002 or so) even existed.

How many of my posts (or other's) who were not speaking of all Southerners (like the OP that got you going, who only mentioned Southern CONFEDERATE TYPES, NOT all Southerners) did you interpret as such through your lens of anger?

I happen to know something about anger myself, having a lot of it. It blinds. Just something to think about.

39. The anger is
temporary, the sadness not so much. I've lived up north and seen every bit as much if not more bigotry...I lived in Washington, D.C. I lived in Chillicothe, OH but I don't feel the need to denigrate northerners over it.

I'm weary right now. I came home to Virginia about 8 years ago (from Arizona) and I was shocked at the stranglehold the rightwing fundamentalists have on so much of this state. What southerners could use right now is some encouragement and support, not derision.

Seven years of BushPutinism's iron grip and nothing has changed beyond a few cosmetic and meaningless changes.

Bushies can still rewrite reality and fool 2/3rds or more of the country easily and as frequentlty as they like, no Free Press or Opposition Party stands in their way.

No one wants to think.

No one wants to look.

I don't know what to tell you. Take a break from DU and come back stronger and rested, then. I might do just that, soon.

There will always be assholes on every message board. As I said above, in any large group of people they can be found.

Use the ignore function, every time you see a real bona-fide Southern Basher, and soon you will eliminate all of them from your sight (or most of them, anyway).

My only suggestion for you on that score, is to take a deep breath and stop for a minute or two to make sure that what you initially perceived as an indiscriminate Southern-bash actually is one.

Listen, the bottom line for almost all of us DUers is the fact that we are all on the same side in preserving the Constitution and fending off BushPutnist Tyranny so that our descendants can enjoy the freedoms we once enjoyed.

No matter where we call home nor where we currently reside, the only place Old America really exists anymore is in our hearts and minds. We must keep it's spirit kindled for the day when the New Totalitarianism ends, if it ends.

THAT is the only real issue here, above and beyond all others.

We are on the same side.

32. There is an element that makes everything very unidimensional
and black and white--no issue more so, than the civil war and North versus South politics. Just as we have some (on both right and left) who have no desire to understand other cultures.

Yet, it goes beyond that... Note the person wanting to make Sherman a "hero" on this thread claims to be a "southerner."
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=389&topic_id=2281585

As a westerner who lived many years in the deep South, I have tried to take the time to understand the complexities and the history to some comprehensive degree. Seeing some of the truly uninformed comments taken as gospel infuriates me--even though I don't technically have a "dog in this fight." I think my sig line says it all...

I've lived in Utah all my life. It's not a beloved state to many people and I've heard tons of slams because of where I live.

But they aren't talking about me. They are talking about the majority of the state who are idiots.

So it doesn't bother me.

And as our population grows, not only Mormon kids but transplants from other states, I never correct anyone who thinks ill of Utah. Hopefully it will keep them out.
