1. a yellow dog Democrat
is a person who will vote for a yellow dog before they will vote for a Republican

I don't know the origins of the term "blue dog Democrat" but I know that the group is made up of more conservative Democrats rather than liberals.

2. Mine's a blue merle, so she likes everyone!
LOL...

Seriously, the Blue Dog label, I think is meant to counter the yellow dog group, which dates back to Southern voters who continued in the late 19th & 20th century to back the Dem candidates because of lingering resentment against the REPUBLICANS following the civil war... (i.e., "I'd rather vote for a Yellow Dog than a Republican....")

I think the Blue Dogs are just in the House of Reps...they are supposedly more fiscally conservative DEMS, who unlike the Yellow Dogs are not so loyal to the party, but rather (supposedly) their ideals. Thus, the latter end up aiding the REPUGS on quite a few occasions where their issues coincide.

3. I didn't realize the expression was that old
and I guess that must mean that a "yellow dog" wasn't considered the best kind of dog!

4. Oh, I don't know... I think they were largely yellow hounds...
very important to Southerners who hunt... Thus, the related phrase when a topic of disagreement comes up, "this dog won't hunt.."

8. A yellow dog Democrat is a term from the old Solid South,
referring to a voter who would vote for a "yellow dog" (an American pariah dog) if it were a Democrat. The Blue Dog Caucus is a play on that. They're a pack of conservative Democrats who have recently managed to get themselves elected in states that have gone Republican in the past few decades.

9. Yellow dog came from the phrase "I/he/she/you would vote for a yellow dog if it were a Democrat"
Blue dog came from a play on that phrase blue was taken from George Rodrigue's blue dog paintings, a couple of which were in Billy Tauzin's office where a group of conservative house Democrats would meet.
