Democrats unable to bring troops home
By ANNE FLAHERTY, Associated Press Writer

Nearly a year after anti-war voters put them in power, congressional Democrats remain unable to pass legislation ordering troops home from Iraq.

Frustrated by Republican roadblocks, Democrats now plan to sit on President Bush's $196 billion request for war spending until next year — pushing the Pentagon toward an accounting nightmare and deepening their conflict with the White House on the war.

"We're going to continue to do the right thing for the American people by having limited accountability for the president and not a blank check," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

(snip)
Sen. Christopher Dodd was the lone Democrat opposing it because he said it did not go far enough to end the war. Other Democrats, including Sen. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, said they too opposed the bill as too soft but that they supported advancing debate.

"The only way to end the war is with a firm deadline that is enforceable through funding," said Dodd, D-Conn.

1. I'm getting really tired of the "stand on principle" Dems, like Dodd (recently) and Feingold--
I like them both, but just for once, could we remain unified and hand Chimpy and the GOP a defeat--just ONCE??? Even if it's not exactly what they want? There are Republicans that have risked their careers and endure a lot of abuse and marginalization from their own side to vote with us on the war, there are other Dems who are a bit squishy on ending the war--these Senators all put aside their personal reservations to vote with us, and suddenly Dodd and Feingold decide to let their egos run amock and try to look all high-and-mighty. It's an act that's getting tired.

5. I would be more concerned if he were the "one more"needed.
Even here it hurts because it makes us look divided when we aren't. I seriously doubt that Dodd cares more than people like Kerry and Feingold who he didn't join in 2006. This is grandstanding.

3. Dodd's right.
Cut the funding and end the political posturing.

4. Clue Me In--I keep picking up reports that Bush is already
bringing troops home.??????

Some Republicans were having that Press Deal there on the hill.
I believe it was Kyle who said the Democrats are going to fine
themselves on the wrong side of this issue.

Last night someone on Fox made a similar comment.

Have you heard anything about some troops either already here
and others on the way???
