Baptist Church Closes Property To Interfaith Thanksgiving Service (No Muslims Allowed)
Organizers of an Austin interfaith Thanksgiving celebration scrambled to find a new location for the annual event.

That's after an evangelical Baptist megachurch objected to Muslims worshipping on its property.

Hyde Park Baptist Church notified Austin Area Interreligious Ministries this week that it wouldn't allow the event scheduled for Sunday at Hyde Park's sports complex, known as the Quarries.

I find this sickening.

2. Thanksgiving being used by these people like this is a disgrace.
Schmucks.

5. I'll agree with you about that
but this wasn't a state matter, this was religious organizations, I believe.

You are right, though, that they look like bigots and fools.

that they have a right to exclude anyone they want from anything...

8. Yes, they did volunteer to hold the service on their property this year.
However, I have a suspicion that since this event is annual and they always have people of all faiths (Interfaith) including Muslims who attend, that this announcement at such a late date was more by design than accident.

4. "In my Father's house are many mansions"
Guess that mega church hasn't read their Bible well, have they?

And from the Old Testament:

"My house shall be a house of prayer for all people."

7. Hmmm... who else thinks we should bar Southern Baptists
like these from everywhere BUT their church. Hey, if they find it so sacred, then why would they want to leave it?

9. Who would Jesus eat with?
Didn't Jesus eat with Publicans and sinners? Did Jesus have anything good to say about the wealthy with their arrogance?

Shame on them. I hope they lose members over this.

10. No surprise. I'm president of our local Ministerial Association,
and it's tiny. Because most of the fundies--the majority of churches in town--won't participate if the Mormons do. And the Mormons do. It'd die completely if we had a mosque or synagogue in town.

12. Couldn't they just erect a prayer shield that would prevent Muslim prayers from reaching Allah?
But if these Baptists want to support atheism by preventing some people's worshipping in their sports complex, I suppose they have that right.

But I'll bet they would never block an event featuring Texas' true religion: football!

;-)

16. I'm not surprised...
Sad to say, but after a lifetime of run-ins with Baptists and other conservative Christian groups, I'd be more surprised if they had actually participated.

All of this hubbub over another Abrahamic faith; can you imagine what would have happened if Pagans had been slated to participate? Yeesh!

17. Must have been a memo from the SBC exec committee
That's the second story this week of an SBC church refusing to host an interfaith event in their community halls. The other one was a Habitat for Humanity celebration at which there would be *gasp* Native American dancing.

Oh, it was the DANCING that was the problem. Nevermind.
